Auditory brain stem responses in patients with human immunotropic virus infection of different stages.

Thirty patients (26 men, 4 women) with human immunotropic virus infection of different stages were examined. Eleven patients had a history of i.v. drug abuse, nine patients had a history of treated lues infection, and one patient suffered from Kaposi's sarcoma. At the time of the examination, opportunistic infections or acute encephalitis were not apparent in any patient. All patients underwent otoneurological examinations, including pure-tone audiometry, caloric vestibular testing, and recording of the auditory brain stem responses (ABR). A geophysical and geochemical approach for seawater intrusion assessment in the Acquedolci coastal aquifer (Northern Sicily)

Vertical electrical sounding (VES’) surveys and chemical analyses of groundwater have been executed in the coastal plain of Acquedolci (Northern Sicily), with the aim to circumscribe seawater intrusion phenomena. This urbanized area is representative of a more general problem interesting most of Mediterranean littoral areas, where intensive overdraft favors a heavy seawater intrusion through the coastline. Aquifer resistivity seems decisively to be conditioned by the chlorine and magnesium content in the main aquifer of the region. Abstract We describe a transputer-based system suitable for accurate measurements of single-fiber electromyographic jitter. It consists of a conventional electromyograph, a home-made interface and a commercially available transputer-based board installed within a PC/AT compatible. Taking advantage of the concurrent operation of two transputer modules, the system features simultaneous data acquisition and statistical signal processing: while data are acquired and analyzed, a real-time visualization of the signal latency and its variability is provided. Quantitative thermoelastic stress analysis by means of low-cost setups

Abstract A low-cost Thermoelastic Stress Analysis (TSA) experimental setup is proposed which uses an ordinary micro-bolometer and in-house developed signal processing scripts. The setup is evaluated by analysing the thermoelastic signal from a tensile and a SENT specimen made of stainless steel AISI 304L, and the bolometer performances are compared with those of a state of the art photon detector. Signal processing is based on off-line cross-correlation, using a self-reference signal which is retrieved from the acquired thermal data.
