Positive Predictive Value of Extraversion in Diagnosing L2 WTC

2021

Willingness to communicate in a foreign/second language (L2 WTC) is now considered an influential variable underlying the second and foreign language learning processes. It is also perceived in terms of a fundamental goal of second language education, because its higher levels result in a greater desire to practise oral communication, bringing about successful language learning. According to the pyramid model of L2 WTC, it is rooted in personality which produces both distal and enduring influences on a student’s verbal behaviour. It can thus be expected that extraversion, a personality dimension identified with energy and enthusiasm and characterised by sensitivity to reward and sociability…

Effects of reading proficiency and of base and whole-word frequency on reading noun- and verb-derived words: An eye-tracking study in Italian primary…

2018

The aim of this study is to assess the role of readers’ proficiency and of the base-word distributional properties on eye-movement behavior. Sixty-two typically developing children, attending 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, were asked to read derived words in a sentence context. Target words were nouns derived from noun bases (e.g., umorista, ‘humorist’), which in Italian are shared by few derived words, and nouns derived from verb bases (e.g., punizione, ‘punishment’), which are shared by about 50 different inflected forms and several derived words. Data shows that base and word frequency affected first-fixation duration for nouns derived from noun bases, but in an opposite way: base frequency ha…

IceTop : the surface component of IceCube

2012

IceTop, the surface component of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole, is an air shower array with an area of 1 km2. The detector allows a detailed exploration of the mass composition of primary cosmic rays in the energy range from about 100 TeV to 1 EeV by exploiting the correlation between the shower energy measured in IceTop and the energy deposited by muons in the deep ice. In this paper we report on the technical design, construction and installation, the trigger and data acquisition systems as well as the software framework for calibration, reconstruction and simulation. Finally the first experience from commissioning and operating the detector and the performance as an …

GAME AS FACILITATOR IN DEVELOPMENT OF PHONOLOGICAL PERCEPTION FOR PRESCHOOL CHILDREN

2016

Language is the highest form of communication, it’s given only to people and it is very important for children’s psychological development. In 5 – 6 years most of the children all native language’s sounds pronounce correctly, phonological perception is formed, however, not all children have reached an appropriate level of development, therefore compulsory preparatory school program of language acquisition in children creates an aversion to learning. Disorders of fonological perception are very complicated and require a lot of serious and patient work in the intervention. In 5 – 6 years of age, children are active, open, spontaneous, curious and very persistent. At this age closest activitie…

In vitro generated human memory-like T cells are CD95 type II cells and resistant towards CD95-mediated apoptosis

2006

An adaptive immune response implies expansion of activated T cells and subsequent elimination to maintain homeostasis in a process called activation-induced cell death. Some cells, however, differentiate into memory cells and ensure a strong secondary immune response. To analyze the apoptosis phenotype of memory T cells on a cellular and molecular level, we have established an in vitro model of T cell activation and generation of cells phenotypically and functionally similar to memory cells. These long-term cultured T cells show a CD95-resistant phenotype, although they are still sensitive towards TCR/CD3-mediated apoptosis. Biochemical analysis revealed that these cells shift from CD95 typ…

Keep your cool and win the game: Emotion regulation and performance in table tennis.

2019

Objective People often feel anxious prior to performance situations, and this can lead to performance decrements. Thus, applying effective emotion regulation strategies could be crucial for achieving maximum performance. Method We investigated the relation between dispositional precompetition emotion regulation and competition performance. Participants were 310 table tennis players (240 men, Mage = 39.07, SD = 15.99). Self-reported emotion regulation behavior was matched with objective performance data. Results We found that positive cognitive change strategies were positively related and negative cognitive change strategies were negatively related to winning in competitions. Furthermore, a…

Web-based real-time data acquisition system as tool for energy efficiency monitoring

2013

A web-based data acquisition system is proposed as a research tool of the energy efficiency monitoring project of the test stands. Basic requirements for the architecture of the data acquisition system are discussed. The architecture of the data acquisition system is proposed to provide the real-time interface with sensors, to acquire and to log data from all sensors with fixed rate, and to deliver logged data through FTP to the end-user.

Kriterien für die Auswahl von Elektronischen Rechenanlagen für Biomedizinische Forschungsinstitute

1979

Computers are now a recognized tool in biomedical research. They are used for the evaluation of data on one hand and on the other hand for data acquisition and control of experiments. Based on our experience, some suggestions concerning the structure of a mini-computer system suitable for a research laboratory are made. According to the two major classes of application, two sets or requirements arise. We argue that it is effective to use this system for data reduction and evaluation because a large percentage of tasks require program development or at least specific input data handling. Therefore, we call for a multi-user time-sharing system which should be equipped with a set of commands t…
