Management and Control of the Read Out Processors (tpps) of the Aleph Time Projection Chamber

1989

The readout of the Aleph time projection chamber (TPC) relies on a set of 72 time projection processors (TPPs), which are based on a Motorola 68020 microprocessor running a real-time operating system. The advanced processing capabilities of the TPPs allow them to perform in parallel a number of tasks, both during and outside of data acquisition, which are outlined. The management and control of such a large number of intelligent devices is presented. The discussion covers the hardware configuration of the TPPs; the software running the TPPs; their management, status, and control; exception handling and message logging; and the TPP monitoring tasks. >

The NA48 event-building PC farm

2003

The NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS aims to measure the parameter $\Re(\epsilon'/ \epsilon)$ of direct CP violation in the neutral kaon system with an accuracy of $2 \times 10^{-4}$. Based on the requirements of: \\\\ * high event rates (up to 10 kHz) with negligible dead time;\\ * support for a variety of detectors with very wide variation in the number of readout channels;\\ * data rates of up to 150 MByte/s sustained over the beam burst;\\ * level-3 filtering and remote data logging in the CERN computer center; \\\\ the collaboration has designed and built a modular pipelined data flow system with 40 MHz sampling rate. The architecture combines custom-designed components with commerciall…

Development of the Optical Multiplexer Board Prototype for Data Acquisition in the TileCal System

2006

This paper describes the development of the optical multiplexer board (OMB), also known as PreROD board, for the TileCal readout system in the ATLAS experiment. The aim of this board is to overcome the problems that may arise in the integrity of data due to radiation effects. The solution adopted has been to add redundancy to data transmission and so two optical fibers with the same data come out from the detector front end boards. The OMB has to decide in real time which fiber, eventually, carries data with no errors switching it to the output link connected to the read out driver (ROD) motherboard where data processing takes place. Besides, the board may be also used as a data injector fo…

Auto-Adaptive Trigger and Pulse Extraction for Digital Processing in Nuclear Instrumentation

2015

International audience; This paper presents a novel auto-adaptive method for pulse triggering and extraction. Pulse triggering uses a threshold that must be placed as close as possible to the noise level. We do this by means of an adaptive threshold level based on real-time noise level estimation. A dynamic estimation of the pulse length is also used for pulse selection. The proposed approach is largely insensitive to noise and enables autonomous extraction of pulses regardless of their shape, height or length. The proposed approach can be used with numerous types of detectors from an analog-to-digital converter, and can be used in conjunction with various pulse processing techniques such a…

A Portable Readout System for Microstrip Silicon Sensors (ALIBAVA)

2009

A readout system for microstrip silicon sensors has been developed. This system is able to measure the collected charge in one or two microstrip silicon sensors by reading out all the channels of the sensor(s), up to 256. The system can operate either with non-irradiated and irradiated sensors as well as with n-type and p-type microstrip silicon sensors. Heavily irradiated sensors will be used at the Super Large Hadron Collider, so this system can be used to research the performance of microstrip silicon sensors in conditions as similar as possible to the Super Large Hadron Collider operating conditions. The system has two main parts: a hardware part and a software part. The hardware part a…

Fast and compact data acquisition for gas-filled detectors with delay line

2004

This article describes the functionality, implementation and performance of a PCI data acquisition board that can be used in conjunction with gas-filled detectors with delay line readout. The board combines a large on-board 256-MByte histogramming memory with a maximum 10-MHz count rate in continuous operation and integrates the time frame generation, histogram building and buffering functionalities in a single PCI board, resulting in a fast, compact and cost-effective data acquisition solution for the Spanish beamline BM16 at ESRF.

The Argo YBJ daq system and the GRID based data transfer

2008

The Argo-YBJ experiment has now reached itsfinal design configuration. The detector system consists of a fullcoverage array (about 5800 square meters) of Resistive PlateChambers (RPCs). The throughput depends on the trigger rateand threshold. The DAQ system must be able to sustain a max-imum transfer rate of the order of 15 MB/s and a high peakdata flow. Data are read out using a typical front-end acquisitionchain built around a custom bus. Specialized electronics have beendesigned and dedicated software has been written to perform thistask. Data are sent to the online farm through a switch exploitinga gigabit ethernet protocol. A solution to transfer data from theYBJ laboratory to the labo…

Data acquisition, remote control and equipment monitoring for ISOLDE RILIS

2013

Abstract With a steadily increasing on-line operation time up to a record 3000 h in the year 2012, the Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) is one of the key components of the ISOLDE on-line isotope user facility at CERN. Ion beam production using the RILIS is essential for many experiments due to the unmatched combination of ionization efficiency and selectivity. To meet the reliability requirements the RILIS is currently operated in shift duty for continuous maintenance of crucial laser parameters such as wavelength, power, beam position and timing, as well as ensuring swift intervention in case of an equipment malfunction. A recent overhaul of the RILIS included the installation…

Characterization of a neutron-beta counting system with beta-delayed neutron emitters

2016

Abstract A new detection system for the measurement of beta-delayed neutron emission probabilities has been characterized using fission products with well known β-delayed neutron emission properties. The setup consists of BELEN-20, a 4π neutron counter with twenty 3He proportional tubes arranged inside a large polyethylene neutron moderator, a thin Si detector for β counting and a self-triggering digital data acquisition system. The use of delayed-neutron precursors with different neutron emission windows allowed the study of the effect of energy dependency on neutron, β and β–neutron rates. The observed effect is well reproduced by Monte Carlo simulations. The impact of this dependency on …
