Data from: Effects of acclimation time and epigenetic mechanisms on growth of Neurospora in fluctuating environments

2018

Reaction norms or tolerance curves have often been used to predict how organisms deal with fluctuating environments. A potential drawback is that reaction norms measured in different constant environments may not capture all aspects of organismal responses to fluctuating environments. We examined growth of the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa in fluctuating temperatures and tested if growth in fluctuating temperatures can be explained simply by growth in different constant temperatures or if more complex models are needed. In addition, as previous studies on fluctuating environments have revealed that past temperatures that organisms have experienced can affect their response to current…

Data from: Continental-scale patterns of pathogen prevalence: a case study on the corncrake

2014

Pathogen infections can represent a substantial threat to wild populations, especially those already limited in size. To determine how much variation in the pathogens observed among fragmented populations is caused by ecological factors, one needs to examine systems where host genetic diversity is consistent among the populations, thus controlling for any potentially confounding genetic effects. Here, we report geographic variation in haemosporidian infection among European populations of corncrake. This species now occurs in fragmented populations, but there is little genetic structure and equally high levels of genetic diversity among these populations. We observed a longitudinal gradient…

Data from: Novel adverse outcome pathways revealed by chemical genetics in a developing marine fish

2017

Crude oil spills are a worldwide ocean conservation threat. Fish are particularly vulnerable to the oiling of spawning habitats, and crude oil causes severe abnormalities in embryos and larvae. However, the underlying mechanisms for these developmental defects are not well understood. Here, we explore the transcriptional basis for four discrete crude oil injury phenotypes in the early life stages of the commercially important Atlantic haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus). These include defects in (1) cardiac form and function, (2) craniofacial development, (3) ionoregulation and fluid balance, and (4) cholesterol synthesis and homeostasis. Our findings suggest a key role for intracellular cal…

Über die Micromelerpetontidae (Amphibia: Temnospondyli). 1. Morphologie und Paläoökologie desMicromelerpeton credneri (Unter-Perm; SW-Deutschland)

1995

This paper presents a redescription of the most important features of the skull roof, palate, hyobranchial apparatus, and the postcranial skeleton ofMicromelerpeton credneri. It is possible to distinguish a temporal sequence of three morphotypes that can be differentiated by size and slight differences in the structure of the skull roof. They led a predaceous existence in the pelagial of three fairly deep lakes that had excellent potential for the preservation of fossils. Comparisons of the size-frequency distributions for specimens from different horizons indicate facultative paedomorphosis by means of progenesis. This phenomenon may be related to different trophic strategies and possible …

MRI of inner ear fluids using modified GRASS sequences: a useful tool in the assessment of the normal and pathological labyrinth

1995

MRI is acquiring a progressively more important role in the investigation of petrous bone disease. Nevertheless, despite the extensive use of MRI in the detection of inflammatory or neoplastic involvement of the seventh and eighth cranial nerves, conventional spinecho images cannot be considered the modality of choice in inner ear imaging “Steady-state sequences” are known to be motion sensitive. By setting a very short repetition time, a large flip angle and a long echo time, one can obtain a sequence sufficiently sensitive to the slow movement of endo- and perilymph. We report our experience in MRI of normal and pathological inner ear with modified GRASS sequences.

Beziehung zwischen Kopfumfang und sonographischer Morphometrie der Ventrikelstrukturen im Neugeborenen- und Säuglingsalter

2001

AIM: To determine normal values of sonographic measurements of the brain in neonates and infants. METHOD: Cerebral ultrasonographic examinations were performed in 143 healthy newborns and infants. The size of the ventricles was determined by ascertaining distances as well as performing planimetric measurements of the ventricular area and circumference in standardized planes. RESULTS: Throughout the course of the study we observed a continous increase in size and a strong correlation with head circumference. The middle coronary plane used for the measurements allows the accurate representation of the ventricles and a more objective assessment of size. CONCLUSION: Based on the morphometric da…

Alpha-Synchronized Stimulation of the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC) in Major Depression: A Proof-of-Principle EEG-TMS Study

2018

High-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) shows therapeutic potential in pharmaco-resistant patients with major depression. However, clinical efficacy is limited by high inter-individual variability and low response rates. One possible strategy to improve the effect size and consistency may be brain state dependent brain stimulation, i.e. coupling of TMS pulses to the endogenous brain states as reflected by the instantaneous oscillatory brain activity. Here we present findings from a proof-of-principle study of alpha-oscillation synchronized brain stimulation of the frontal cortex in patients with major depression (…

Avoiding lumbar segmental arteries injury in oblique lateral interbody fusion procedure

2020

Lumbar interbody fusion is performed to treat several spinal disorders and involves the insertion of a structural graft into an intervertebral disk space to promote bony arthrodesis. Although the posterior approach to the lumbar spine was long the most frequently adopted surgical strategy to perform fusion, anterior approaches, first introduced in 1906, have recently blossomed. Patient expectations and increasing demands for shorter hospital stay and early recovery have led to more innovative surgical techniques to reduce iatrogenic injury and postoperative morbidity. Depending on the level to be treated, several approaches have been developed, each dealing with peculiar anatomic obstacles:…

TMS-EEG signatures of glutamatergic neurotransmission in human cortex

2019

AbstractNeuronal activity in the brain is regulated by an excitation-inhibition balance. Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) evoked electroencephalographic (EEG) potentials (TEPs) represent a novel way to quantify pharmacological effects on neuronal activity in the human cortex. Here we tested TEPs under the influence of a single oral dose of two anti-glutamatergic drugs, perampanel, an AMPA-receptor antagonist, and dextromethorphan, an NMDA-receptor antagonist, and nimodipine, an L-type voltage-gated calcium channel blocker in 16 healthy adults in a pseudorandomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover design. Single-pulse TM…
