Beyond the post-war Schumpeterian consensus: Governance, legitimacy and post-democracy
2010
Two distinct visions of democratic politics, both of which are in sharp contrast to Schumpeter's competitive leadership model, are to be found at the heart of governance theory. The first advocates anti-democratic solutions, aiming to depoliticize public policy, while the second supports ultra-democratic reforms promoting the involvement of citizens in policy-making. The article pursues three main aims. First, it proposes a reading of the weaknesses attributed to Schumpeter's competitive leadership model. Second, it clarifies the nature of the innovations advocated by the anti-democratic camp in its attempt to build a regulatory state, and by the ultra-democratic camp in its struggle to eng…
From equilibrium to chaos and back : methodological evaluation of research of the majority rule
2000
According to the canonical model situated at the heart of the " economic " - or, as the political scientists prefer to call it, rational-choice - theory of (democratic) politics, whenever the matter to be decided raises, or consists of, at least two distinct issues, it is generally impossible to reach a determinate decision by using the majority rule. This problem, referred to as that of disequilibrium, equilibrium instability, or even"chaos", was first underplayed and then deemed ominous to the point of seriously undermining the development prospects of the whole theory. However, more recently, the concern it was the source o f until the 1980s has given way to a state of renewed confidence…
Informing, engaging, mobilizing or interacting: Searching for a European model of web campaigning
2011
This study presents data from content analyses of the websites of all parties that stood in the 2009 European parliamentary elections in France, Germany, Great Britain and Poland. It cross-nationally examines the main functions of the websites, the adoption of Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 features, and the political and cultural factors that determine parties’ online communication. The findings show that while the main website function varies across countries, Web 1.0 is still the dominant mode of campaigning. Moreover, offline inequalities within and between nations determine differences in parties’ individual online strategies: specifically, major parties in states with long histories of democrac…

Gustav Radbruch, a left-wing jurist under the Weimar Republic
2011
What did it mean to be a left-wing jurist under the Weimar Republic? This study attempts to answer this question through the example of Gustav Radbruch (1878-1949), legal philosopher, but also Social-Democratic activist, supporter of the Republic and for some time Member of Parliament and Justice Minister. Even though he is not as well-known as Hans Kelsen or Carl Schmitt,, Radbruch participated in all the important legal debates of his time – debates which reflected the most significant issues of that time of crisis, the Weimar Republic. By analyzing the way in which Radbruch responded to the challenges of the crisis of law and democracy, this study tries to contribute to a better comprehe…
Pres…
Party Positions on Differentiated European Integration in the Nordic Countries: Growing Together, Growing Apart?
2020
The Nordic countries constitute an interesting laboratory for the study of differentiated European Integration. Even though Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden share some historical, cultural, socio-economic and political characteristics, all those countries have ultimately opted for a different kind of relationship with the EU. Whereas Finland, a member of the Eurozone since its inception in 1999, has been considered to be part of the Union’s ‘inner core’ for quite some time, Iceland and Norway, in contrast, have opted to remain outside the EU albeit closely associated via the European Economic Area Agreement. The variation of relationships has also been reflected in Nordic parti…
