The behaviour of real construction materials in different predictable conditions is so complex that it is difficult to describe it precisely in terms of mathematical equations. The problem of the mathematical modelling of materials is, therefore, to be solved rationally by taking into consideration the material type, construction method, load value and external conditions (e.g. temperature). Abstract It is economically important for manufacturers of high-temperature machines to be able to measure creep so that they can predict residual service life more accurately. This paper describes and refines an image analysis method for evaluating creep in laboratory test pieces. Material characteristics in the analysis of heated steel beams

Beam fire tests are expensive and complicated. They may be replaced by calculations of the heated beam deflection by means of the method presented in this paper. The following material characteristics in the analysis of the deflection of beams during fire may be taken as fundamental: the steel creep characteristic at elevated temperatures, the modulus of elasticity and the coefficient of thermal expansion. According to the yield hinge theory, the yield stress is the criterion of failure of steel beams in fire. In this paper the behaviour in compression of RC columns externally strengthened with concrete jacketing is analysed and a cross-section analysis of the jacketed member under axial load and bending moment is developed. Analysis of the chemical and microstructural modifications effects on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of a lime-treated clay

The paper presents the results of a characterization of kinetic characteristics of pozzolanic reaction with the aim to investigate the time-dependent modification of clay properties as a consequence of mixing with lime. Results of chemical analyses are in agreement with the increase of mechanical properties and with the observed microstructure modifications up to one year of curing time. The rate of development of pozzolanic reactions seems to be almost constant while the time required for their completion is dependent on the lime content. Abstract Our understanding of the flow properties of deforming rocks in the Earth's lithosphere is mainly based on theoretical work and on the extrapolation of high-strain-rate experimental data to the low strain rates of rock deformation in nature. The geometry of structures in naturally deformed rocks can be an additional source of information on the rheology of the lithosphere. Effects of male removal on female foraging behavior in the Eurasian treecreeper

In old, spruce-dominated forests of central Finland, Eurasian treecreepers Certhia familiaris divide their territories spatially during the breeding season. Females forage primarily on the upper parts of the tree trunks, while males use the lower parts of the tree trunks. In this study we removed males from eight territories in the early nestling period to see if the mate's absence would change the foraging patterns of the resident female. Widowed females foraged at lower heights, thus behaving more like paired males. These females also spent less time on each tree and on each foraging bout than did paired females. On the numerical implementation of a 3D fractional viscoelastic constitutive model

The aim of this paper is the implementation of a 3D fraction al viscoelastic constitutive law in a user material subroutine (UMAT) in the finite element software Abaqus. Essential to the implementation of the model is access to the strain history at each Gauss point of each element in a constructive manner. Details of the UMAT and comparison with some analytical results are presented in order to show that the fractional viscoelastic constitutive law has been successfully implemented.
