Study of the Viral and Microbial Communities Associated With Crohn's Disease: A Metagenomic Approach

2013

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze and compare the diversity and structure of the viral and microbial communities in fecal samples from a control group of healthy volunteers and from patients affected by Crohn's disease (CD). METHODS: Healthy adult controls (n=8) and patients affected by ileocolic CD (n=11) were examined for the viral and microbial communities in their feces and, in one additional case, in the intestinal tissue. Using two different approaches, we compared the viral and microbial communities in several ways: by group (patients vs. controls), entity (viruses vs. bacteria), read assembly (unassembled vs. assembled reads), and methodology (our approach vs. an existing pipe…

P228 Cytomegalovirus Infection: is it a cause of flare-up in inflammatory bowel diseases?

2020

Abstract Background The presence of CMV in blood is quite common in patients with severe flares of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD) and seems to predict an adverse outcome. The impact of antiviral treatment on CMV in this setting (indications and drug options) is an unresolved issue. Our aim was to reassess the CMV role in patients with IBD hospitalised for severe exacerbations, analysing the relationship between CMV positivity, clinical characteristics, antiviral therapy and disease outcomes. Methods We evaluated a homogeneous cohort of 97 consecutive patients with IBD hospitalised from 2012 to 2018. Data regarding age, gender, smoke, familial predisposition, type of IBD, e…

Evaluation of a Support Vector Machine Based Method for Crohn’s Disease Classification

2019

Crohn’s disease (CD) is a chronic, disabling inflammatory bowel disease that affects millions of people worldwide. CD diagnosis is a challenging issue that involves a combination of radiological, endoscopic, histological, and laboratory investigations. Medical imaging plays an important role in the clinical evaluation of CD. Enterography magnetic resonance imaging (E-MRI) has been proven to be a useful diagnostic tool for disease activity assessment. However, the manual classification process by expert radiologists is time-consuming and expensive. This paper proposes the evaluation of an automatic Support Vector Machine (SVM) based supervised learning method for CD classification. A real E-…

Simple technique for the intraoperative detection of Crohn's strictures with a calibration sphere.

2000

Several methods have been used to detect and evaluate small-bowel strictures in Crohn's disease. We describe a simple technique for the calibration of strictures using a 2.5-cm medical plastic sphere. This method provides an aseptic, safe, and effective calibration of the entire small bowel.

Hydro-MRT bei entzündlichen Darmerkrankungen - Eine koloskopisch-histologische Vergleichsstudie*

2001

PURPOSE To compare hydro-MRI with colonoscopy and biopsy specimen regarding the assessment of inflammatory activity and the differentiation of inflammatory bowel diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS After an oral bowel opacification using 1000 ml of a 2.5% mannitol solution and a rectal bowel opacification using 250-500 ml of a 0.9% saline solution, axial and coronal breath-hold sequences +/- Gd-DTPA (HASTE-["half-Fourier acquisition single-shot turbo spin echo"] and dynamic FLASH-["fast low angle shot"]) were acquired in 27 patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The enhancement of the bowel wall as well as morphological MRI findings were correlated with colonoscopy and biopsy specimens. By me…

W1113 Efficacy and Safety of Endoscopic Balloon Dilation of Symptomatic Intestinal Crohn's Disease Strictures

2009

Aim: To evaluate prospectively the clinical efficacy and safety of endoscopic hydrostatic balloon dilation in a consecutive cohort of symptomatic intestinal Crohn’s disease strictures. Methods: Between September 2003 and December 2008 we performed endoscopic balloon dilations in 37 Crohn’s disease patients with 39 intestinal symptomatic strictures (4 naive and 35 postoperative). Dilations were performed using a Rigiflex through-the-scope balloon. Clinical success rate was claimed if a patient remained asymptomatic and did not require surgery or further endoscopic dilation, following technical success. Actuarial curves of clinical, endoscopic (redilation) and surgical recurrence were obtaine…

Oral manifestations as the first presenting sign of Crohn?s disease in a pediatric patient

2017

Crohn’s disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Although the GI tract is the primary site of involvement, many patients, particularly in pediatric cases, first present with non-intestinal manifestations, including oral lesions. Oral manifestations of CD in children occur in around 50-80% of cases, and about 30% of CD cases in children occur first in the mouth. Recognizing such oral lesions in the pediatric population, and requesting a biopsy, may expedite the diagnosis of CD. We describe a 15 year old male who presented with oral findings of multiple aphthous ulcers and plaques of pink papules of the buccal vestibule. We highlight the initi…

Laryngeal manifestations of Crohn's disease

2020

Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. It should be considered a multisystemic disease due to its extra-intestinal manifestations found in 25-40% of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Laryngeal involvement is very uncommon and the lesions in hypopharynx and larynx are edema, ulcerations and granulation tissue. Symptoms are dysphonia, dysphagia, odynophagia and airway restriction. Laryngeal manifestations of Crohn’s disease are usually successfully treated with oral steroids. We describe a 54-year-old woman who presented with dysphagia and odynophagia for 20 days. She had a history of Crohn’s disease for 6 years. Laryngoscopy revealed a cobblestone appearance of epig…

OP20 Risk and predictors of surgery in a newly diagnosed cohort of IBD patients in the biologic era: Results from the EpidemIBD study

2021

Abstract Background The management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has substantially changed in the last decades, both in relation to medical and surgical treatments. Aims Principal: To know the rate of surgery in a newly diagnosed IBD cohort within the first year after diagnosis. Secondary: To describe the type of surgeries and indications in this cohort, and to identify predictive factors for surgery (focused on intestinal resection) in these patients. Methods Prospective, population-based nationwide registry. Adult patients diagnosed with IBD -Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC)- during 2017 in Spain were included and were followed-up for 1 year. Kaplan-Meier curves were…
