Behind the scenes of artificial intelligence: a study of micro-work platforms in France
2019
Este artículo es una versión resumida del informe “Le Micro-travail en France. Derrière l’automatisation de nouvelles précarités au travail?» This article is a summarized version of the report "Le Micro-travail en France. Derrière l’automatisation de nouvelles précarités au travail?" .; International audience; Micro-work internet services allocate small, standardized tasks of data generation and annotation to crowds of providers. The outputs are mainly used to produce artificial intelligence solutions. It is an exemplary instance of the “platformization” of the economy, and of the transformations of labour that digital technologies bring about. To uncover the conditions under which micro-wo…
Crowdsourcing as a mode of open innovation: Exploring drivers of success of a multisided platform through system dynamics modelling
2020
This article aims to explore drivers of success of a crowdsourcing platform. The study conceptualizes crowdsourcing as a mode of open innovation and places such a concept within the context of the sharing economy. Upon this framework, the paper analyses the case of InnoCentive, a successful crowdsourcing platform where innovation-driven organizations search for solutions to their R&D tasks. The system dynamics model frames main InnoCentive business processes and offers a causal perspective on the relationships between platform performance—in terms of users base—and resources structure. The discussion on simulation outputs is carried out through a dynamic performance management view of p…
Gratitude Questionnaire–20 Items (G20): A Cross-Cultural, Psychometric and Crowdsourcing Analysis
2020
The use in psychology of crowdsourcing platforms as a method of data collection has been increasing in popularity because of its relative ease and versatility. Our goal is to adapt the Gratitude Questionnaire–20 Items (G20) to the English language by using data collected through a crowdsourcing platform. The G20 is a comprehensive instrument that takes in consideration the different basic processes of gratitude and assesses the construct’s cognitive, evaluative, emotional, and behavioral processes. We test the psychometric properties of the English version of the G20 with a Prolific (ProA) user sample. We assess the adequacy of the G20 for the crowdsourcing population in its English version…
Understanding Crowdturfing : The Different Ethical Logics Behind the Clandestine Industry of Deception
2017
Crowdturfing, the dark side and usually unnoticed face of crowdsourcing, represents a form of cyber-deception in which workers are paid to express a false digital impression. While such behavior may not be punishable under the jurisdiction of formal law, its consequences are destructive to the cohesion and trustworthiness of online information. The conceptual work at hand examines the current literature on the topic, and lays the foundation for a theoretical framework that explains crowdturfing behavior. We discuss crowdturfing through three ethical normative approaches: traditional philosophical ethics, business ethics, and codified rules. We apply these lenses to an illustrative example o…
