“The Same Staff Can Be Enough”. Employers’ Resilience Strategies in Recruitment Decisions

2018

Studies on resilience have sprung from a need to understand the survival strategies of organizations when faced with the emergence of unexpected, potentially destructive and negative events in the lives of the organizations. This article, on the other hand, intends to highlight organizational resilience when confronted with unexpected positive events, seldom considered by such studies. This is the well-known macroeconomic phenomenon of the time lag between economic growth and labor demand at the moment that a regressive economic cycle is reversed. With which strategies do companies, in the face of such an event, transform a resilient attitude into real resilient behavior? Five strategies of…

The love boat. La crociera come eterotopia

2023

On a cruise, spatial coordinates are suspended (orientation with respect to the land and to the labyrinthine plan of the ship is lost), the temporal dimension (time is marked by the palimpsest of daily activities rather than by clocks), and the actor's characteristics (with the alteration of some of the identity traits of the subjects involved). The passenger experiences on the voyage an 'other' self, one that in some ways cannot be revealed within everyday life. And the boat becomes the place in which a series of paradoxes are realised: the realm of the freedom, but also a form of holiday slavery in which everything is capillarily foreseen beforehand; a space in which apparent luxury is ma…

Cruise tourists on the mainland. Itineraries and interactions.

2017

This study is based on fieldwork conducted using participant observation – including both direct observation of/participation in the activities of informers by the researcher, several interviews, and the analysis of pictures and various material – accomplished aboard some cruises (in the Mediterranean Sea) and on the mainland (in some of the destinations). It takes into account the case of cruise passengers who decide to self-manage a destination visit. During fieldwork, I could study some particular forms of interaction taking place on two different levels: the forms of interaction established between passengers and destinations – focusing particularly on Palermo, Italy – and the system of…

Wellness Centres on Costa Crociere Cruises: Body, Space, and Representation from an Anthropological and Linguistic perspective

2016

Many tourist services are connected to the care of the body. The tourist industry proposes different vacation opportunities where the body is the main focus of the experience. This kind of tourism implies specific services that show a particular universe of representation and particular languages. In this context, cruise tourism is an interesting case to analyze because a part of its services gives a central role to the body which, on-board, organizes and is organized within dedicated spaces and times. Cruise ships provide spaces for the wellness of the passengers such as swimming pools, gyms, spas or beauty centres. The analysis proposed in this work is based, on one hand, on a recent anth…

‘Tour me onshore’: understanding cruise tourists’ evaluation of shore excursions through text mining

2018

ABSTRACTThe aim of this paper is to shed light on the elements underlying cruise tourists’ evaluation of shore excursions, approaching them as an interaction of expressive and instrumental components. To fulfil the aim of the investigation, a thematic content analysis of 1296 online reviews was conducted using the text-mining software Leximancer. The results of the study revealed that cruise visitors with different overall satisfaction with their guided tour focus the narrative of their opinion on different tour attributes. Thus, the dominant themes of the cruise passengers delighted with their tour included the performance of the tour guide, the arrangement of the tour, as well as the cruis…

Cruise passengers' expenditure at destinations: Review of survey techniques and data collection

2020

Spending by cruise passengers constitutes an important contribution to the economy of destinations. The issues related to the analysis of the expenditure have been widely debated for many years both in the scientific literature and in the common political debate. Despite 20 years of empirical research on this topic, not consolidated quantification methods exist to inform the debate. This work offers a brief review of the principal research on cruise tourist spending. It analyses the main characteristics of the surveys, reviews the different methods and techniques employed as well as assesses the main results. The article concludes with a discussion of the studies conducted and identifies fu…

Perceptions and behaviour of cruise tourists during their visit to a port of call

2019

[EN] The purpose of the present research is to assess the perceptions of authenticity and crowding of cruise tourists visiting a port of call and its influence on their future behavioural intentions. The research was carried out in the city of Valencia, because it is one of the main Spanish cruise ports and is a representative city of the Mediterranean ports of call for the cruise business. A total of 467 valid interviews were obtained. For the analysis of data, the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS version 22.0) was used. The findings reveal that Valencia is perceived as an authentic destination with moderate levels of human and spatial crowding. The analysis also demonstra…

Similarity of GPS Trajectories Using Dynamic Time Warping: An Application to Cruise Tourism

2019

The aim of this research is to propose an analysis of the trajectories of cruise passengers at their destination using Dynamic Time Warping algorithm. Data collected by means of GPS devices relating to the behavior of cruise passengers in the port of Palermo have been analyzed in order to show similarities and differences among their spatial trajectories at destination. A cluster analysis has been performed in order to identify segments of cruise passengers, based on the similarity of their trajectories. The results have been compared in terms of several metrics derived from GPS tracking data in order to validate the proposed approach. Our findings are of interest from a methodological pers…

Determinants of Access to Academic Careers in France

2010

International audience; The recruitment of young PhD graduates in the academic sector is associated with great uncertainty regarding their potential teaching and research productivity. Thus, in order to recruit the best PhD graduates for permanent positions, employers (universities or research institutions in France) select according to signals sent by the applicants in their curriculum vitae: publications, post-doc position, host research institution.... In our paper, we analyse the factors affecting the access duration to a permanent job in three academic fields in France, using a sample of PhDs graduated in 2001. A discrete-time model, controlling for post-doc participation, is used to a…
