Design of an FBG based-on sensor device for large displacement deformation
2013
This article deals with the modeling of a strain-displacement transducer conceived for extending the FBG measurement range. The intrinsic fragility of the optical fiber limits their application to cases characterized by relatively small deformations. To extend the employ to the large displacement field (i.e. morphing applications), a dedicated device was conceived, constituted by a circular ring connected to the structure and laterally integrated with a FBG sensor. This device was mathematically modeled minimizing the potential energy this way arriving at a description of the displacement and deformation field along the curvilinear abscissa. The theoretical predictions were then validated t…

Power quality effects on the measurement of reactive power in three-phase power systems in the light of the IEEE Standard 1459–2000.
2007
Reactive power is a very important quantity in electric power systems since it affects the efficiency of these systems. Also, capacitive loads can produce over-voltages in electric transformers by Ferranti effect, which produces bad power quality, so it is necessary to measure the reactive power correctly. In this paper reactive phenomena in three-phase power systems with unbalanced voltages are expressed and measured in the light of the IEEE Std 1459-2000. For analyzing the reactive phenomena the positive-sequence fundamental frequency instantaneous reactive power is used. By comparing the expressions of this instantaneous power in three-phase systems with unbalanced voltages with those co…
Bioactivation of the Fungal Phytotoxin 2,5-Anhydro-D-glucitol by Glycolytic Enzymesisan Essential Component of itsMechanism of Action
2002
An isolate of Fusarium solani, NRRL 18883, produces the natural phytotoxin 2,5-anhydro-ᴅ-glucitol (AhG). This fungal metabolite inhibited the growth of roots (I50 of 1.6 mᴍ), butit did nothave any in vitro inhibitory activity. The mechanism of action of AhG requires enzymatic phosphorylation by plant glycolytic kinases to yield AhG-1,6-bisphosphate (AhG-1,6- bisP), an inhibitor of Fru-1,6-bisP aldolase. AhG-1,6-bisP had an I50 value of 570 μᴍ on aldolase activity, and it competed with Fru-1,6-bisP for the catalytic site on the enzyme, with a Ki value of 103 μᴍ. The hydroxyl group on the anomeric carbon of Fru-1,6-bisP is required for the formation of an essential covalent bond to ζ amino fu…
Different modes of activating phosphofructokinase, a key regulatory enzyme of glycolysis, in working vertebrate muscle
2002
Glycolytic flux in white muscle can be increased several-hundredfold by exercise. Phosphofructokinase (PFK; EC 2.7.1.11) is a key, regulatory enzyme of glycolysis, but how its activity in muscle is controlled is not fully, understood. In order not to neglect integrative aspects of metabolic regulation, we have studied in frogs (Rana temporaria) a physiological form of muscle work (swimming) that can be triggered like a reflex. We analysed swimming to fatigue in well rested frogs, recovery from exercise, and repeated exercise after 2 h of recovery. At various times, gastrocnemius muscles were tested for glycolytic intermediates and effectors of PFK. All metabolites responded similarly to the…
Full modal analysis of confocal coaxial elliptical waveguides
2000
An efficient method for analysing confocal coaxial elliptical waveguides is presented. Using elliptical coordinates, the differential Helmholtz equation is transformed into a linear matrix eigenvalue problem by means of the method of moments. The expressions of the vector mode functions for the full spectrum of these guides are constructed, including the TEM, TM and TE modes. The convergence of the method is very good, giving an efficient and accurate code. Comparisons with numerical results found in the technical literature validate the presented theory.
WWOX, a Chromosomal Fragile Site Gene and its Role in Cancer
2006
Allelic imbalances affecting the long arm of chromosome 16 have been extensively reported in the literature as common abnormalities observed in various carcinoma types, As a result of loss of heterozygosity (LOH) studies in breast cancer, we delimited a genomic area within chromosome 16 that demonstrated the highest frequency of abnormalities. This led us to the identification and cloning of WWOX, a candidate tumor suppressor gene (TSG) that spans a fragile region of DNA located at 16q23.3-24.1 (FRA16D: the second most active common chromosomal fragile site in the human genome). This gene encodes a protein that contains two WW domains responsible of protein-protein interactions and a short-…
Haemorheological components in the pre-geriatric and geriatric age range in a randomly selected Western Sicily population sample (Casteldaccia study)
1993
{Received 24.8.1992; accepted 7.12.1992} On a randomly selected western Sicily population sample (Casteldac cia Study: 600 subjects; 300 males and 300 females) of an age range from 40 to 79 years, were determined: Haematocrit (Htc) , blood vi scosity, plasma viscosity, filterability of whole blood and fibrinogen. Par ticipation was 97%, being 582 subjects (M = 287, F = 295). All the parameters measured showed a progressive increase with age and si gnificant differences were found between male and female subjects: Htc and blood viscosity were higher in male subjects (p < 0.01), while plasma viscosity, whole blood filterability and fibrinogen were higher in female subjects (p < 0.05). In …
Ridge-line optimal detector
2000
Image processing techniques have seen many developments in recent years. Starting from the pioneering work of Canny, Deriche developed a second order recursive filter capable of detecting stepped contours. However, there are other contour shapes that those filters struggle to detect. We describe a new optimal filter sensu Canny for detecting ridge-line contours. This is a third order recursive and even filter. It is dependent on three parameters by which detection accuracy is adjusted. The results obtained by applying this filter to (possibly noise- affected) images are compared with those in the work by Ziou. © 2000 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. Machine Learning Methods for One-Session Ahead Prediction of Accesses to Page Categories
2004
This paper presents a comparison among several well-known machine learning techniques when they are used to carry out a one-session ahead prediction of page categories. We use records belonging to 18 different categories accessed by users on the citizen web portal Infoville XXI. Our first approach is focused on predicting the frequency of accesses (normalized to the unity) corresponding to the user’s next session. We have utilized Associative Memories (AMs), Classification and Regression Trees (CARTs), Multilayer Perceptrons (MLPs), and Support Vector Machines (SVMs). The Success Ratio (SR) averaged over all services is higher than 80% using any of these techniques. Nevertheless, given the …
