Discovery of a soft X-ray 8 mHz QPO from the accreting millisecond pulsar IGR J00291+5934

In this paper, we report on the analysis of the peculiar X-ray variability displayed by the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR J00291+5934 in a 80 ks-long joint NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observation performed during the source outburst in 2015. The light curve of the source was characterized by a flaring-like behavior, with typical rise and decay time scales of ~120 s. The flares are accompanied by a remarkable spectral variability, with the X-ray emission being generally softer at the peak of the flares. Effects of dead time losses on terrestrial gamma ray flash measurements with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment

[1] Measurements from the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) are the only ones where characteristics of single terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) have been obtained thus far. However, it has been reported that the measurements suffer from significant dead time losses which complicates the analysis and raises question about earlier BATSE studies. These losses are due to the high-intensity flux combined with limitations of the time resolution of the instrument. The methods currently available for assessing the oxyhaemoglobin dissociation curve parameters are expensive, lengthy, require a large volume of blood, and the results obtained are modified by anaesthetic gases. The equipment required for the method described includes: a microtonometre, microcuvettes, 3 gas bottles containing different oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen mixtures (4.5%, 5.6%, 89.9%; 3.5%, 5.6%, 90.9%; 2.5%, 5.6%, 91.9% respectively), a microxymetre, and a micropHmetre. Background Tuberculosis (TB) still is a major worldwide health problem, with 10.4 million new cases in 2016. Only 5–15% of people infected with M. tuberculosis develop TB disease while others remain latently infected (LTBI) during their lifetime. Effects of mixed reality head-mounted glasses during 90 minutes of mental and manual tasks on cognitive and physiological functions

Background We evaluated the effects of a mixed reality (MR) head-mounted deviceon some cognitiveand physiological functions during 90 min tasks in an attempt to determine their safety for workers. Methods A total of 12 volunteers performed 90-min intellectual and manual tasks with and without MR glasses. Balance, Stroop, and memory tests were conducted before, during and after these tasks. Heart rate and electromyographic activity of some muscles were recorded. A survey was used to determine subjective fatigue, pain, or discomfort.
