The immunological implications of the new Vitamin D metabolism
2018
Vitamin D is actually a neurohormone whose pleiotropic activities encompass regulation of calcium-phosphate metabolism, cell proliferation and immunomodulation. Starting from a cutaneous compound, 2 hydroxylation steps are required to produce the active form of vitamin D3, named calcitriol [1, 25-(OH)2-cholecalciferol]. The second hydroxylation step may occur at different tis- sues and cell types, including kidney, lung, prostate, brain, immune cells and placenta. Based on the advancing knowledge of Cytochrome P450 functions, a new conception of Vitamin D metabolism emerged. It implies that, depending on the site where the second hydroxylation step occurs, the active hormone can act as a ca…
Voriconazole and the liver.
2015
Voriconazole is an azole useful for the prophylaxis and the treatment of aspergillosis and other fungal infections in immunosuppressed subjects, as those found in aplasia after aggressive polychemotherapy treatments, after hematopoietic stem cell, liver or lung transplantation. Its administration in therapeutic doses lead to extremely varied serum levels from patient to patient and even to the same patient. The explanations are varied: nonlinear pharmacokinetics, certain patient-related factors, including genetic polymorphisms in the cytochrome P450 2C19 gene, the kidney and liver function, simultaneous administration with other drugs metabolised by the same cytochrome. It is recommended to…
Humoral response of roach (Rutilus rutilus) to digenean Rhipidocotyle fennica infection
1997
The humoral immune response of roach (Rutilus rutilus) to cercariae of the digenean trematode, Rhipidocotyle fennica, was studied. Antibodies against R. fennica were found in wild roach in lakes where fish are infected by the parasite. Antibody levels were higher in sera collected in September than in sera collected in June, due to infection of R. fennica during the late summer. In experimental aquarium studies, roach immunized with homogenized cercariae produced antibodies against R. fennica. An especially strong response was elicited by infecting fish with living cercariae emerging from infected clams. The specificity of the antibodies, as shown in Western blots, was different between fis…
Cyphophthalmi aus Brasilien (Opiliones)
1969
Summary There are given descriptions of all species of the Subordo Cyphophthalmi so far discovered in Brazil: Neogovea immsi Hinton is redescribed; three further species are new to science. The proposals of Hoffman (1963) regarding morphological peculiarities of the Cyphophthalmi are accepted.
DIVERSITE GENETIQUE ET PHENOLOGIE DE CYPERUS ESCULENTUS L. (CYPERACEAE) POUR UNE GESTION INTEGREE DE L'ESPECE DANS LES CULTURES DE HAUTE LANDE
2006
We studied the development, phenology, demography and genetic diversity of Cyperus esculentus (Cyperaceae), an invasive clonal perennial weed in the small-statured crops of Haute Lande, southwestern France. The goal was to understand its colonizing capacity and then make propositions for an integrated management of the species. The colonizing capacity of C. esculentus is linked to the huge subterranean vegetative development, with both foraging thanks to rhizomes and multiplication thanks to tubers. On the other hand, the local crop systems provide all the needs of the species: water, light and nutriments without competition by other weeds. Genetic analyses showed a low genetic diversity and…

Cholestérol-24S-hydroxylase (CYP46A1) et homéostasie du cholestérol dans la rétine en conditions physiologiques et pathologiques
2012
Cholesterol is the major sterol found in the retina. In its free form, cholesterol is present in all cell layers of the retina, whereas cholesteryl esters mainly accumulate at the basement of the retinal pigment epithelium. The intrinsic capacity of the retina to synthetize cholesterol appears limited. Some extra-retinal pathways actively participate to cholesterol uptake to the retina. Müller glial cells may contribute to cholesterol supply to retinal neurons, especially for synaptic formation. Cholesterol accumulation or conversely deficiency have deleterious consequences on neuron survival. Maintaining the equilibrium between cholesterol supply and neosynthesis in the one hand and choles…
Kilka uwag o alkoholu i tytoniu w życiu żołnierzy polskich w XVII w. i w pierwszej połowie XVIII w
2017
For centuries alcohol had constituted a key component of soldiers’ diet. As early as in ancient times, health benefits of wine and its impact on human body were appreciated, foremostly its germicidal properties. Probably alcohol was popular among soldier of the first Piasts or knight of the time of regional disintegration, time of king Władysław 1 the Elbow-high, Casimir the Great or kings of the Jagiellonian dynasty. It may be presumed that the former only drank beer, however, knights in XIV-XV treated it as a common everyday beverage, relishing wine for special occassions and during feasts. In XVI century the list of alcoholic beverages was enriched by vodka - aqua vitae. In the first hal…
