Glycosidic juvenogens: derivatives bearing alpha,beta-unsaturated ester functionalities.
2007
Abstract A series of the protected alkyl glycosides 5a / 5b – 12a / 12b was synthesized from the parent isomeric alcohols (insect juvenile hormone bioanalogs; juvenoids), 4-[4′-(2″-hydroxycyclohexyl)methylphenoxy]-3-methyl-but-2-enoic acid ethyl ester ( 1a / 1b – 4a / 4b ; racemic structures) and ( 1a – 4a ; enantiopure structures). Cadmium carbonate was used as a promoter of this Koenigs–Knorr reaction, and the products were obtained in 82–92% yields. Deprotection of the carbohydrate functionality of 5a / 5b – 12a / 12b was carefully performed using ethanolysis in the presence of zinc acetate, due to the presence of another ester functionality in the aglycone part of the molecule of protec…
Potential Antioxidant Activity of Calcium and Selected Oxidative Stress Markers in Lead- and Cadmium-Exposed Workers
2020
Occupational lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) exposure occurs during processing and casting of nonferrous metals such as zinc. In contrast to Pb and Cd, Ca is essential for living organisms due to its important role in a multitude of functions, from cell signaling to bone growth. Pb and Cd exposure affects calcium metabolism in various ways. The aim of this study was to investigate the blood levels of Pb, Cd, and Ca and the levels of selected oxidative stress biomarkers in workers exposed to Pb and Cd. Population groups included 264 male employees in a lead-zinc smelter. The study population was divided into two subgroups based on the median of Ca serum level (2.42 mmol/l): the low-Ca-level group…
Biomonitoring of 20 elements in urine of children. Levels and predictors of exposure
2015
The levels of 20 elements in the urine of one hundred twenty children (Ages 6-11) from an agricultural and an urban area of Valencia Region, Spain, were assessed. The seven essential elements analysed (Co, Cu, Mn, Mo, Se, V, Zn) presented average concentrations (geometric mean) ranging from 0.22 µg L(-1) to 63 µg L(-1) (except Zn with 525 µg L(-1)). Eight out of the 13 toxic elements determined (As, Ba, Cd, Cs, Ni, Pb, Tl, Hg) had frequencies of detection of 100%, with geometric mean concentrations from 0.17 µg L(-1) (Cd) to 33.6 µg L(-1) (As). About 18% of children revealed urinary levels of total As higher than the normal range of 100 µg L(-1) accepted by the ATSDR. The urine analysis was…
Developmental and Reproductive Effects of Low Cadmium Concentration onArtemiaparthenogenetica
2003
Hatching, reproductive, and lifespan characteristics of an Artemia parthenogenetica population from La Mata (Alicante, Spain) exposed to cadmium were studied. No effects on percentage of cyst hatched nor time of hatching were observed on cysts exposed from 0.01 to 5 mg Cd/L. Cohorts of Artemia were chronically exposed to cadmium in life-table experiments to test whether ecologically relevant impacts may occur after several generations of exposure to a very low concentration of cadmium. Chronic toxicity tests were performed using neonates of a third generation of shrimps exposed to 0.08 mg Cd/L (1/1000 of the LOEC for 24 h acute toxicity test). No significant reduction in the intrinsic rate …
Levels of trace elements in human hair samples of adolescents living near petrochemical plants
2020
The aim of the study is a comparative analysis to investigate human hair metal profiles of adolescents residing near petrochemical plants (Sicily, Italy). We selected the small town of Augusta, Gela, and Pace del Mela, and a control area made up of the towns characterized by low anthropogenic activity. Twenty trace elements were measured in samples of scalp hair from adolescents (11–14 years old) of both genders. Hair samples were cleaned using a rigorous cleaning method, mineralized, and processed for analyses by inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In industrial sites, zinc was always the most abundant element, ranging from186 to 217 μg g−1. Following zinc, the elements …
Microsporidia parasites disrupt the responses to cadmium exposure in a gammarid.
2011
7 pages; International audience; Microsporidia parasites are commonly found in amphipods, where they are often asymptomatic, vertically-transmitted and have several effects on host sexuality and behaviour. As amphipods are often used as models in ecotoxicological studies, we investigated the effect of microsporidian infections on energy reserves and defence capacities of Gammarus roeseli under cadmium stress. Only females were infected by two microsporidia parasites: Dictyocoela roeselum or Dictyocoela muelleri. In physiological conditions, microsporidia had no major effect on energy reserves and defence capacities of G. roeseli, while under cadmium exposure, energy reserves and antioxidant…
Influence of landscape composition and diversity on contaminant flux in terrestrial food webs: a case study of trace metal transfer to European black…
2012
13 pages; International audience; Although understanding the influence of the spatial arrangement of habitats and interacting communities on the processes of pollutant flux and impacts is critical for exposure and risk assessment, to date few studies have been devoted to this emergent topic. We tested the hypothesis that landscape composition and diversity affect the transfer of trace metals to vertebrates. Bioaccumulation of Cd and Pb in blood and feathers of European blackbirds Turdus merula (n=138) was studied over a smelter-impacted area (Northern France). Landscape composition (type and occurrence of the different habitats) and diversity (number of different habitat types and the propo…
Evaluation of left ventricular mass on cadmium-zinc-telluride imaging: Validation against cardiac magnetic resonance
2017
Background. Single-photon emission computed tomography has shown relevant limitations in the quantification of left ventricular (LV) mass. We sought to compare the estimates of LV mass on Cadmium-Zinc-Telluride (CZT) myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) as compared to cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). Methods and results. Twenty-five patients underwent MPI on a CZT camera and CMR on a 1.5 T scanner within 12 ± 3 weeks. LV mass was quantified on CZT images using two softwares: 4D-MSPECT (4DM) and Emory Cardiac Toolbox (ECTb). LV mass by CMR was quantified using MASS software (Medis, Leiden, The Netherlands). LV mass values obtained with 4DM and ECTb were highly reproducible [intraclass correla…
Subthreshold oscillation of the membrane potential in magnocellular neurones of the rat supraoptic nucleus
2000
The hypothalamic supraoptic nucleus (SON) contains two major populations of magnocellular neurosecretory neurones, producing and secreting vasopressin and oxytocin, respectively (for review see Poulain & Wakerley 1982). Neurones of a subpopulation of supraoptic neurosecretory cells share the capability of generating phasic bursts of action potentials. In these neurones, action potentials are succeeded by a depolarizing afterpotential (DAP; Andrew, 1987; Armstrong et al. 1994; Li et al. 1995). Depending on the discharge frequency, DAPs summate, eventually resulting in the generation of a plateau potential that gives rise to the discharge of a long-lasting train of action potentials. Thus, DA…
Molecular Cloning and mRNA Expression of Heat Shock Protein Genes and Their Response to Cadmium Stress in the Grasshopper Oxya chinensis
2015
Heat shock proteins (Hsps) are highly conserved molecular chaperones that are synthesized in response to stress. In this study, we cloned the full-length sequences of the Grp78 (glucose-regulated protein 78), Hsp70, Hsp90, and Hsp40 genes from the Chinese rice grasshopper Oxya chinensis. The full-length cDNA sequences of OcGrp78, OcHsp70, OcHsp90, and OcHsp40 contain open reading frames of 1947, 1920, 2172, and 1042 bp that encode proteins of 649, 640, 724, and 347 amino acids, respectively. Fluorescent real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) was performed to quantify the relative transcript levels of these Hsp genes in different tissues and developmental stages. The mRNAs encoding these four …
