Parasite–copepod interactions in Svalbard: diversity, host specificity, and seasonal patterns

AbstractCopepods of the genera Calanus and Pseudocalanus are important components of Arctic marine ecosystems. Despite the key roles of these zooplankters, little is known about the organisms they interact with most intimately, their parasites and symbionts. We applied metabarcode sequencing to uncover eukaryotic parasites present within these two copepod genera from three areas around the high Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. Abstract There has been a large-scale geographical re-distribution of the North Sea cod stock over the past century, and recent surveys indicate a north-eastern modal distribution. Here we assess the consequences of the contemporary distribution of North Sea cod (Gadus morhua) spawning biomass to inter-ocean recruitment potential. By simulations of drifting cod eggs and larvae spawned in the northern North Sea over 16 spawning seasons (in the period 1995–2016), we show that a large portion of the North Sea produced pelagic juveniles most likely settle along the Norwegian Sea shelf. The studies of calanoid copepod Limnocalanus macrurus feeding rates and mating related to vertical migration were conducted in October 2005 in the Bothnian Sea. The monocyclic copepod Limnocalanus macrurus develops mostly to adult and larger copepodites stages in autumn and these stages were investigated. Bothnian Sea is a brackish-water basin in Baltic Sea with comparatively big depth therefore Limnocalanus macrurus which prefer to live in deep and cold water is more abundant in this Baltic Sea part. AbstractNew atopid trilobites are described from the early Cambrian Cumbres beds and Herrerías shale of northern Huelva Province (Andalusia, Spain) and are dated as middle–late Marianian (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 4). New specimens ofAtops calanusRichter and Richter, 1941 are described and the Laurentian speciesPseudatops reticulatus(Walcott, 1890b) is recognized for the first time in the Mediterranean subprovince. The associated trilobite assemblage studied herein suggests an age close to the base of Cambrian Stage 4.
