An increased calcitonin serum level is suggestive of a medullary thyroid cancer (MTC), but is not pathognomonic. The possibility of false positives or other calcitonin-secreting neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) should be considered. Serum calcitonin levels are generally assessed by immunoradiometric and chemiluminescent assays with high sensitivity and specificity; however, slightly moderately elevated levels could be attributable to various confounding factors. Summary The distribution of perikarya showing substance P- ( SP ) or calcitonin gene-related peptide-like inununoreactivity ( CGRP-LI ) in the rat trigeminal ganglion ( TG ) were investigated by means of immunohistochemical methods. Approximately 50% of the perikarya contain CGRP while SP-Ll was observed in 1/3 of the cells. IR fibres were seen to leave the ganglion via the ophtalmic, maxillary, and mandibular nerves. The combination of peptide histochemistry and retrograde labelling of cells in the ganglion following injection of a fluorescent tracer into the pineal gland reveals that few SP- or CGRP-LI trigeminal neurons innervate the pineal gland. By the use of light microscopic immunohistochemistry, epidermal Merkel cells have been examined for the coexistence of some neuropeptides and chromogranin A (CGA). Peptide and CGA-immunophenotypes were similar in adult Merkel cells but variable in fetal skin, where CGA preceded the expression of peptides which were partly expressed only in a subpopulation of Merkel cells from hair follicles. Thus, only Substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) were expressed in a subpopulation of Merkel cells from hair follicles. Abstract Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a neuropeptide present around vasculature very early during development, when smooth muscle cells (SMC) are still proliferating and not yet totally differentiated. We investigated the effects of CGRP on proliferation and differentiation of SMC in culture; 10 −7 M CGRP added in the medium of cultured smooth muscle cells every 2 days did not significantly changed cells growth rate in 1% FCS. At the opposite, this treatment modulated proliferation of cells grown in 10% FCS medium. Two distinct populations of SMC with different growth rates were obtained from our primary cultures. In this study we examined the postsynaptic targets of perisomatic inhibitory cells in the hilar region of the dentate gyrus where the proportion of potential target cells (excitatory mossy cells and inhibitory interneurons) is approximately equal. This chapter explains symptoms and nature of neurogenic inflammation and its importance in posttraumatic complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Neurogenic inflammation regularly accompanies excitation of primary afferent nociceptors. It has two major components – plasma extravasation and vasodilatation. Abstract Oxidative stress induced by a glucose/glucose oxidase (G/GO) generator system dose-dependently decreased the viability of cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) as estimated by MTT assay. Cell death was induced in 40% of cells exposed to 0.2 IU/ml of the free radical generating mixture. Annexin-V labeling, Hoechst staining together with DNA laddering demonstrated that apoptosis was responsible for this cell loss. Pretreatment of the cells with 10−8 M calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) significantly attenuated the damaging effect of the oxidative stress.
