Identification of binding peptides on calcium silicate hydrate: a novel view on cement additives.

2014

Cement is the most used industrial product in the world. Although the chemical composition of the material has stayed more or less the same since its discovery by the Romans around 2000 years ago, [ 1 ] the performance has been increased by chemical additives. Spectacular buildings like the Willis Tower in Chicago, Taipei 101 or lately the over 800 m high Burj Khalifa in Dubai were realizable thanks to the development of high performance building materials. [ 2 ] Not only for such prestige objects but also in daily building processes, the trend goes towards always higher buildings because of the continued urbanization which was identifi ed already in 1982 as one of the so-called “megatrends…

A New Monte Carlo Method for the Titration of Molecules and Minerals

2007

The charge state of molecules and solid/liquid interfaces is of paramount importance in the understanding of the reactivity and the physico-chemical properties of many systems. In this work, we porpose a new Monte Carlo method in the grand canonical ensemble using the primitive model, which allows us to simulate the titration behavior of macromolecules or solids at constant pH. The method is applied to the charging process of colloidal silica particles dispersed in a sodium salt solution for various concentrations and calcium silicate hydrate nano-particles in a calcium hydroxide solution. An excellent agreement is found between the experimental and simulated results.

Remineralization ability of two hydraulic calcium-silicate based dental pulp capping materials: Cell-independent model

2019

Background This study aimed to evaluate remineralizing ability of two hydraulic calcium-silicate cements (Biodentine and TheraCal LC). Material and Methods Artificial carious lesions were introduced into the pulpal floors (1-1.5 mm) and axial walls of occlusal prepared cavity halves through pH cycling. Cycling was made through demineralizing solution (pH 3), for 8 hours and remineralizing solution (pH 7) for 16 hours. The total period of pH cycling was 14 days. Prepared cavities with the tested materials seated directly on the pulpal floor and in contact with the axial walls were stored in phosphate buffer solutions (PBS) (pH 7.2–7.4). The changes in the weight percentages (wt%) of calcium …

Retrograde filling material in periapical surgery: a systematic review

2021

Background Periapical surgery focuses on the treatment of teeth with persistent periapical lesions when orthograde root canal treatment fails. Although MTA® is the gold standard material for retrograde filling, Biodentine® - a tricalcium silicate-based cement - has been proposed in order to resolve several of its limitations. A systematic review has been carried out to compare the physicochemical properties of Biodentine® versus MTA® as root-end filling material in periapical surgery. Material and Methods An electronic search was conducted by two independent examiners during March 2020 in the Cochrane, PubMed-MEDLINE and Scopus databases. In addition, a manual search was made in specialized…

Comparative Cytocompatibility and Mineralization Potential of Bio-C Sealer and TotalFill BC Sealer

2019

The aim of this study was to investigate the cytocompatibility and mineralization potential of two premixed hydraulic endodontic sealers compared with an epoxy resin-based root canal sealer. The cellular responses and mineralization capacity were studied in human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) that were exposed to premixed hydraulic sealers, Bio-C Sealer (Angelus, Londr&iacute

Al-27 and Si-29 Solid-State NMR Characterization of Calcium-Aluminosilicate-Hydrate

2012

International audience; Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is the main constituent of hydrated cement paste and determines its cohesive properties. Because of the environmental impact of cement industry, it is more and more common to replace a part of the clinker in cement by secondary cementitious materials (SCMs). These SCMs are generally alumina-rich and as a consequence some aluminum is incorporated into the C-S-H. This may have consequences on the cohesion and durability of the material, and it is thus of importance to know the amount and the location of Al in C-S-H and what the parameters are that control these features. The present paper reports the Si-29 and Al-27 MAS NMR analyses of …

The structure and stoichiometry of C-S-H

2004

Abstract This review relates to the models describing the structural evolution of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) at the crystal–chemical level as a function of composition in terms of calcium to silicon ratio. The different models are compared and discussed in the light of recent spectroscopic and microscopic data. Taking into account the structure and the morphological properties of C-S-H, a surface reaction thermodynamic model has been proposed and discussed to predict and correlate the chemical and structural evolution of C-S-H with solution chemistry.

Experimental and theoretical evidence of overcharging of calcium silicate hydrate

2007

International audience; Electrokinetic measurements such as electrophoresis may show an inversion of the effective surface charge of colloidal particle called overcharging. This phenomenon has been studied by various theoretical approaches but up to now very few attempts of confrontation between theory and experiment have been conducted. In this work we report electrophoretic measurements as well as Monte Carlo simulations of the electrokinetic potential for the surface of calcium silicate hydrate (Csingle bondSsingle bondH), which is the major constituent of hydrated cement. In the simulations, the surface charge of Csingle bondSsingle bondH nanoparticles in equilibrium with the ionic solu…

Study of parameters endogeneous and exogeneous to ordinary Portland ciment influencing hydration of its main phase : tricalcium silicate

2012

This work devoted to study various parameters influencing hydration of silicate phase main Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) was performed at the Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Carnot de Bourgogne (ICB). This study is part of the project "Crystal Growth Control" initiated by BASF in order to monitor and provide the best as possible the hydration of Ordinary Portland Cement. The dissolution of alite, like the pure C3S one, is fast in pure water. Speed decreases with deviation from equilibrium and the concentration of aluminates ions in solution. There is also an adsorption on the surface of the aluminum which is into the alite and released by dissolution. Germination and growth of C-S-H has bee…
