Ureteral Stones: Shockwave Lithotripsy or Ureteroscopy, Which is Best?

2021

Background Renal stone disease is common and can cause emergency presentation with acute pain due to ureteric colic. International guidelines have stated the need for a multicentre randomised controlled trial (RCT) to determine whether a non-invasive outpatient (shockwave lithotripsy [SWL]) or surgical (ureteroscopy [URS]) intervention should be the first-line treatment for those needing active intervention. This has implications for shaping clinical pathways. Objective To report a pragmatic multicentre non-inferiority RCT comparing SWL with URS. Design, setting, and participants This trial tested for non-inferiority of up to two sessions of SWL compared with URS as initial treatment for ur…

Scialoadeniti ostruttive.Aggiornamento in tema di diagnosi e di terapia

2006

In head and neck district, major salivary gland diseases seem to have a considerable epidemiological and clinical impact, especially in obstructive disease. Major salivary glands, in fact, having a ductal system can develop several diseases: sialoadenitis, sialodochitis and sialoceles. Particularly, the obstructive sialoadenitis, with or without sialolithiasis, are the most frequent inflammatory disorder, especially for submandibular gland. In the clinical practice, the diagnostic approach for obstructive sialoadenitis up to now consisted of traditional Rx, ultrasonographic technique, scintigraphy technique, C.T., sialography technique with contrast or sialography M.R. Since '9O years, lith…

Sialolitiasis parotídea del conducto de Stensen

2006

I disturbi specifici dell'apprendimento matematico. Interpretazioni teoriche, processo diagnostico e modelli di intervento

2017

Training of Attention in Children With Low Arithmetical Achievement

2014

This study focuses on the role of attentional processes in arithmetical skills and examines if training of basic attentive skills may improve also working memory abilities reducing arithmetic difficulties. In order to study the efficacy of attentional treatment in arithmetic achievement and in enhancing working memory abilities a test-treatment-retest quasi experimental design was adopted. The research involved 14 children, attending fourth and fifth grades, with Arithmetical Learning Disabilities (ALD) assigned to experimental and control conditions. The numerical comprehension and calculation processes were assessed using the ABCA battery (Lucangeli, Tressoldi, & Fiore, 1998). Attenti…

Anxiety, self-esteem and self-handicapping: A comparison between pupils with dyscalculia and normal learning | Ansia, autostima e self-handicapping: …

2014

Clinical and educational research places emphasis on the emotional and motivational factors which characterise learning disabilities. The aim of this research is to study the relationship between the school anxiety, the school self-esteem and the employ of self-handicapping strategies in children with dyscalculia and normal learning. Sixty pupils attending third grade junior school were given a battery of tests assessing emotional and motivational variables. On the whole, the results show that children with dyscalculia have higher levels of anxiety and lower self-esteem. Moreover, the anxiety seems to influence the self-esteem only in the group of children with normal learning.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy of Ureteral Stones: Clinical Experience and Experimental Findings

1986

AbstractESWL of impacted ureteral or caliceal stones is not as successful as expected. To study this problem a model for extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy of ureteral stones has been designed. After initial fragmentation of the outer shell of impacted stones during the first series of shock wave application those fragments are kept in place by external mucosal contact, creating a lot of new interfaces.Absorption or reflection of shock wave energy within this fragmented shell seems to be responsible for the poor success rate in these cases. In regard to our experimental and clinical results we advise pushing ureteral stones back into the renal collecting system by means of a ureteral cat…

Sialoendoscopy in the management of the salivary gland disorders

2016

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the long-term (> 6 month) outcome of patients suffering from obstructive sialadenitis treated by sialoendoscopy. METHODS: Between 2009 and 2013 seventy-six subjects underwent sialoendoscopy under local anesthesia at the University Hospital P. Giaccone of Palermo. RESULTS: The mean age of presentation was 50.5 years for male (56.6%) and 44.7 years for female (43.4%). The presenting symptoms were frequent pain in 72% of cases, frequent purulent secretions in 65% of cases, frequent swelling in 62% of cases and frequent bitter taste in 44% of cases. Affected glands were in 54 cases the submandibular unilaterally, in 21 cases the parotid unilate…
