Exploring working memory in children with low arithmetical achievement

2005

Abstract This research aimed at exploring the working memory functions in children with low arithmetical achievement and normal reading, compared to age matched controls (mean age 9 years). All the children completed a series of working memory tasks, involving the central executive functions (using both linguistic and numerical material), the phonological loop (using words, pseudo-words and digits) and the visual sketchpad (using both static visual-spatial patterns and visual-spatial sequences). Results indicated that poor arithmeticians performed worse than age-matched controls in all the visual sketchpad tasks and in all the central executive tasks, whether they used linguistic or numeric…

Large Fibres in Urinary Calculi—-Promoters of Stone Formation

1988

Large fibres (phi 10-20 microns, length up to 5,000 microns) are sometimes imbedded in urinary calculi. It may be that these fibres can catch sediment particles and promote stone growth. By scanning electron microscopy the morphology of the fibres was studied as well as the relationship of the fibres with crystalline stone components. The reported findings suggest that the fibres are possibly formed in the tubuli as the result of an hitherto unknown defect.

PNA

2009

Bernardo. This article presents part of a study aiming to analyze the effect of problem and problem solvin…

Tactile enumeration: A case study of acalculia

2018

Abstract Enumeration is one of the building blocks of arithmetic and fingers are used as a counting tool in early steps. Subitizing—fast and accurate enumeration of small quantities—has been vastly studied in the visual modality, but less in the tactile modality. We explored tactile enumeration using fingers, and gray matter (GM) changes using voxel-based morphometry (VBM), in acalculia. We examined JD, a 22-year-old female with acalculia following a stroke to the left inferior parietal cortex. JD and a neurologically healthy normal comparison (NC) group reported how many fingers were stimulated. JD was tested at several time points, including at acute and chronic phases. Using the sensory …

The use of operative ultrasonography for the localization of renal calculi.

1987

The ultrasonically guided nephrotomy technique using B-scanning to identify the localization of stones and Doppler sonography to identify avascular parenchymal areas for nephrotomies allows for transparenchymal stone removal without the need for renal artery clamping and renal cooling. In 175 procedures the average blood loss was 1,350 ml and the rate of residual stones requiring a secondary intervention was 2.8%. Despite the advent of new noninvasive treatment modalities, this technique is still applied in 23% of staghorn stones.

ESWL Prediction of outcome and failure Prevention

2007

Based on our own experiences and a review of the recent literature, this article evaluates recent developments in predicting outcomes and failures of shockwave lithotripsy when treating patients with urinary tract stones. After a detailed MEDLINE research, the authors identified several variables that influence and predict extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) success. These variables may be categorized as stone variables, patient variables and operator variables. Only multivariate analysis on a large number of homogenous patients may offer an objective evaluation of the factors conditioning ESWL outcome.
