A Novel Mathematical Model For TLCD: Theoretical And Experimental Investigations

In this paper, a novel mathematical model for the Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) is presented. Taking advantages of fractional derivatives and related concepts, a new equation of motion of the liquid inside the TLCD is obtained. Experimental laboratory tests have been performed in order to validate the proposed linear fractional formulation. Comparison among experimental results, numerical obtained using the classical formulation and numerical with the new linear fractional formulation are reported. On the influence of the initial ramp for a correct definition of the parameters of fractional viscoelastic materials

Creep and/or Relaxation tests on viscoelastic materials show a power-law trend. Based upon Boltzmann superposition principle the constitutive law with a power-law kernel is ruled by the Caputo's fractional derivative. Fractional constitutive law posses a long memory and then the parameters obtained by best fitting procedures on experimental data are strongly influenced by the prestress on the specimen. As in fact during the relaxation test the imposed history of deformation is not instantaneously applied, since a unit step function may not be realized by the test machine. Approximate survival probability determination of hysteretic systems with fractional derivative elements

Abstract A Galerkin scheme-based approach is developed for determining the survival probability and first-passage probability of a randomly excited hysteretic systems endowed with fractional derivative elements. Specifically, by employing a combination of statistical linearization and of stochastic averaging, the amplitude of the system response is modeled as one-dimensional Markovian Process. In this manner the corresponding backward Kolmogorov equation which governs the evolution of the survival probability of the system is determined. The Limit Notion at Three Educational Levels in Three Countries

AbstractThis paper documents how the limit concept is treated in high school, at a university and in teacher education in England, France and Sweden. To this end we make use of vignettes, data-grounded accounts of the situation at the three levels in the three countries. These are analysed using the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD). While university praxeologies are relatively similar across the three countries, greater differences manifest themselves in high school and teacher education. Transport equations and quasi-invariant flows on the Wiener space

Abstract We shall investigate on vector fields of low regularity on the Wiener space, with divergence having low exponential integrability. We prove that the vector field generates a flow of quasi-invariant measurable maps with density belonging to the space L log L . An explicit expression for the density is also given.

Sets versus trial sequences, Hausdorff versus von Mises: “Pure” mathematics prevails in the foundations of probability around 1920

Abstract The paper discusses the tension which occurred between the notions of set (with measure) and (trial-) sequence (or—to a certain degree—between nondenumerable and denumerable sets) when used in the foundations of probability theory around 1920. The main mathematical point was the logical need for measures in order to describe general nondiscrete distributions, which had been tentatively introduced before (1919) based on von Mises’s notion of the “Kollektiv.” In the background there was a tension between the standpoints of pure mathematics and “real world probability” (in the words of J.L. A fully adaptive multiresolution scheme for image processing

A nonlinear multiresolution scheme within Harten's framework [A. Harten, Discrete multiresolution analysis and generalized wavelets, J. Appl. Numer. Math. 12 (1993) 153-192; A. Harten, Multiresolution representation of data II, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 33 (3) (1996) 1205-1256] is presented. It is based on a centered piecewise polynomial interpolation fully adapted to discontinuities. Compression properties of the multiresolution scheme are studied on various numerical experiments on images.
