Uncertainty in environmental and hydrological mathematical modelling

2012

The current state of knowledge regarding uncertainties in urban drainage models is poor. This is in part due to the lack of clarity in the way model uncertainty analyses are conducted and how the results are presented and used. There is a need for a common terminology and a conceptual framework for describing and estimating uncertainties in urban drainage models. Practical tools for the assessment of model uncertainties for a range of urban drainage models are also required to be developed. This paper, produced by the International Working Group on Data and Models, which works under the IWA/IAHR Joint Committee on Urban Drainage, is a contribution to the development of a harmonised framewor…

Mathematical protocols for calibration of wastewater treatment models

2015

Activated sludge models can be very useful for designing and managing wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, as with every model, they need to be calibrated for correct and reliable application. Activated sludge model calibration is still a crucial point that needs appropriate guidance. Indeed, although calibration protocols have been developed, the model calibration still represents the main bottleneck to modelling. This abstract shows a procedure for the calibration of an activated sludge model based on a comprehensive sensitivity analysis and a novel step-wise Monte Carlo-based calibration of the subset of influential parameters. The key point of the step-wise procedure is that ca…

Calibration of misonidazole labeling by simultaneous measurement of oxygen tension and labeling density in multicellular spheroids

1995

To correlate misonidazole concentrations and oxygen pressures (Po2) at identical locations within EMT6/Ro multi-cell spheroids (mean diameters +/- SD: 867 +/- 20 microns), Po2 measurements were performed with oxygen-sensitive microelectrodes during incubation of these spheroids with tritiated misonidazole (10 mg/I; 445 microCi/mg). In each individual spheroid, Po2 profiles were correlated with the corresponding spatial distribution of misonidazole as quantified by conventional autoradiography and grain counting. To compare the oxygenation status of spheroids in the measuring chamber with that of spheroids in spinner culture, misonidazole labeling was performed in both environments following…

Hyperspectral UAV-Imagery and photogrammetric canopy height model in estimating forest stand variables

2017

Remote sensing using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) -borne sensors is currently a highly interesting approach for the estimation of forest characteristics. 3D remote sensing data from airborne laser scanning or digital stereo photogrammetry enable highly accurate estimation of forest variables related to the volume of growing stock and dimension of the trees, whereas recognition of tree species dominance and proportion of different tree species has been a major complication in remote sensing-based estimation of stand variables. In this study the use of UAV-borne hyperspectral imagery was examined in combination with a high-resolution photogrammetric canopy height model in estimating forest v…

Evaluation of nutritional parameters in infant formulas and powdered milk by Raman spectroscopy

2007

It has been made a critical evaluation of the application of near infrared Fourier transform-Raman spectroscopy for the simultaneous determination of the most important nutritional parameters such as energetic value, carbohydrate, protein and fat contents of infant formula and powdered milk samples based on the use of partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis. A highly heterogeneous population of 23 samples, covering a wide range of infant food formula and powdered milk, were obtained from the Spanish market. Raman spectra, obtained by excitation with a Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm, show no disturbing fluorescence effects; therefore sample spectra can be recorded without any previous prepa…

An Overview of the Regional Experiments for Land-Atmosphere Exchanges 2012 (Reflex 2012) Campaign

2015

The REFLEX 2012 campaign was initiated as part of a training course on the organization of an airborne campaign to support advancement of the understanding of land-atmosphere interaction processes. This article describes the campaign, its objectives and observations, remote as well as in situ. The observations took place at the experimental Las Tiesas farm in an agricultural area in the south of Spain. During the period of ten days, measurements were made to capture the main processes controlling the local and regional land-atmosphere exchanges. Apart from multi-temporal, multi-directional and multi-spatial space-borne and airborne observations, measurements of the local meteorology, energy…

Sensor Calibration and Registration for Mobile Manipulators

2016

International audience; —This paper describes the methods used to register a mobile manipulator to a workstation to perform assembly tasks. The nonlinear, least square model of the system is formulated and Ceres Solver is used to compute the position of the robot arm relative to the mobile base. The use of non-contact fiducials to test the accuracy and repeatability of the mobile manipulator positioning in the context of an assembly operation is also discussed. Using mathematical methods and indirect measurements it is possible to compute the offset between physical components of the system where direct measurement is not feasible.

Preferential solvation of poly(methyl methacrylate) and a bisphenol A diglycidyl ether by size-exclusion chromatography

2004

The preferential adsorption coefficient, lambda, of poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, in solutions formed by an epoxy resin in tetrahydrofuran (THF), was studied by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC). Only PMMA of lowest molar mass was preferentially solvated by epoxy but at low concentrations of epoxy in the mixture. At higher epoxy content PMMA was preferentially solvated by THF. A simultaneous and competitive solvation between the specific interactions PMMA-epoxy and the self association of epoxy at high concentrations would be the responsible of this inversion point. The more compacted coil of PMMA of higher molecular weights in solution could explain the lack of interaction of these po…

Analysis of the sensitivity to the systematic error in least-squares regression models

2004

An algorithm that calculates the sensitivity to the systematic error of the fitted parameters of a least-squares regression model, with respect to the known parameters, is developed. The algorithm can be applied to mechanistic and empirical models, obtained by linear and non-linear regression, including principal component and partial least-squares. It can be useful in identifying those parameters or calibration regions that can influence other parameters and the response mostly, and thus, whose accuracy should be particularly procured. Other applications are the weighing of experimental points and the comparison of different models and regression methods in terms of its ability of amplifyi…
