Comparison of two portable solid state detectors with an improved collimation and alignment device for mammographic x-ray spectroscopy.

We describe a portable system for mammographic x-ray spectroscopy, based on a 2 X 2 X 1 mm3 cadmium telluride (CdTe) solid state detector, that is greatly improved over a similar system based on a 3 X 3 X 2 mm3 cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) solid state detector evaluated in an earlier work. The CdTe system utilized new pinhole collimators and an alignment device that facilitated measurement of mammographic x-ray spectra. Mammographic x-ray spectra acquired by each system were comparable. Gene expression microarrays allow a researcher to measure the simultaneous response of thousands of genes to external conditions. Affymetrix GeneChip{ $Ⓡ$} expression array technology has become a standard tool in medical research. Anyway, a preprocessing step is usually necessary in order to obtain a gene expression measure. Aim of this paper is to propose a calibration method to estimate the nominal concentration based on a nonlinear mixed model. This method is an enhancement of a method proposed in Mineo et al. (2006). The relationship between raw intensities and concentration is obtained by using the Langmuir isotherm theory.

Abstract Objective. Heart rate (HR) monitoring provides a convenient and inexpensive way to predict energy expenditure (EE) during physical activity. However, there is a lot of variation among individuals in the EE-HR relationship, which should be taken into account in predictions. The objective is to develop a model that allows the prediction of EE based on HR as accurately as possible and allows an improvement of the prediction using calibration measurements from the target individual. Abstract We developed an electrochemical assay for the detection of odorant molecules based on a rat odorant-binding protein (rOBP3). We demonstrated that rOBP3 cavity binds 2-methyl-1,4-naphtoquinone (MNQ), an electrochemical probe, as depicted from the decrease of its electrochemical signal, and deduced the dissociation constant, Kd MNQ = 0.5(± 0.2) μM. The amount of MNQ displaced from rOBP3 by 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine (IBMP), a model odorant molecule, was measured using square-wave voltammetry. Abstract A statistical approach was employed to model the spatial distribution of rainfall-triggered landslides in two areas in Sicily (Italy) that occurred during the winter of 2004–2005. The investigated areas are located within the Belice River basin and extend for 38.5 and 10.3 km 2 , respectively. A landslide inventory was established for both areas using two Google Earth images taken on October 25th 2004 and on March 18th 2005, to map slope failures activated or reactivated during this interval. A new cut-off criterion has been proposed for the selection of uninformative variables prior to chemometric partial least squares (PLS) modelling. After variable elimination, PLS regressions were made and assessed comparing the results with those obtained by PLS models based on the full spectral range. To assess the prediction capabilities, uninformative variable elimination (UVE)-PLS and PLS were applied to diffuse reflectance near-infrared spectra of heroin samples. This paper highlights the statistical methodology used in a dissection experiment carried out in Romania to calibrate and standardize two classification devices, OptiGrade PRO (OGP) and Fat-o-Meat'er (FOM).
