Démocratisation de l'enseignement supérieur et emprise des parcours
2014
This article looks at how the organization of the education system and the pathways leading to higher education enable social mobility or on the contrary the reproduction of inequalities. We thus compare three countries: France, Switzerland, and Canada. The results using panel data in these three countries show two different situations. The more higher education is valued rather than vocational training, the more inequalities tend to increase. The competition is such that it is the youth with a privileged social background who benefit more from its expansion. On the other hand, when the vocational education and training is more valued, inequalities in higher education could tend to be more …
Localization of quantitative trait loci for diapause and other photoperiodically regulated life history traits important in adaptation to seasonally …
2015
Seasonally changing environments at high latitudes present great challenges for the reproduction and survival of insects, and photoperiodic cues play an important role in helping them to synchronize their life cycle with prevalent and forthcoming conditions. We have mapped quantitative trait loci (QTL) responsible for the photoperiodic regulation of four life history traits, female reproductive diapause, cold tolerance, egg-to-eclosion development time and juvenile body weight in Drosophila montana strains from different latitudes in Canada and Finland. The F2 progeny of the cross was reared under a single photoperiod (LD cycle 16:8), which the flies from the Canadian population interpret a…

Qui suis-je : Discontinuity as part of teacher identity in Canadian French immersion
2020
The scarcity of research on French immersion teachers’ professional identity contrasts with the increasing popularity of French immersion programs in Canada and the concomitant need for French immersion teachers. This study explores the professional identity negotiation of four French immersion teachers in Alberta, Canada, with a focus on discontinuity. Semi-structured interviews conducted face-to-face with the participants were analysed using dialogic narrative analysis. The findings highlight how discontinuity is occasioned by a change in knowledge about the French immersion teaching as a profession, encountering classroom realities, shifting one’s values concerning second language learni…
Evidence for cryptic glacial refugia from North American mountain sheep mitochondrial DNA
2006
The separation of populations by ice sheets into large refugia can account for much of the genetic diversity found in present day populations. The evolutionary implications of small glacial refugia have not been as thoroughly explored. To examine refugial origins of North American mountain sheep Ovis spp., we analyzed a 604 bp portion of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region from 223 O. dalli and O. canadensis. Major refugia were identified in eastern Beringia and southern North America, and we found evidence for two smaller refugia situated between the Laurentide and Cordilleran glaciers. Our results are the first to demonstrate support for survival of any organism in the latter two…
Managed ventricular pacing vs. conventional dual-chamber pacing for elective replacements: the PreFER MVP study: clinical background, rationale, and …
2008
Udgivelsesdato: 2008-Mar AIMS: Several clinical studies have shown that, in patients with intact atrioventricular (AV) conduction, unnecessary chronic right ventricular (RV) pacing can be detrimental. The managed ventricular pacing (MVP) algorithm is designed to give preference to spontaneous AV conduction, thus minimizing RV pacing. The clinical outcomes of MVP are being studied in several ongoing trials in patients undergoing a first device implantation, but it is unknown to what extent MVP is beneficial in patients with a history of ventricular pacing. The purpose of the Prefer for Elective Replacement MVP (PreFER MVP) study is to assess the superiority of the MVP algorithm to convention…
An Analysis of the Presence and Composition of OutLists at United States, Canadian, and European Medical Institutions
2019
Sexual and gender minority (SGM) medical students and physicians are exposed to bias in professional contexts. One strategy for promoting SGM visibility and inclusion within medicine is the development of institutional OutLists, which are online, opt-in lists of SGM-identified individuals affiliated with an academic institution. We present the first quantitative evaluation of publicly accessible OutLists at medical institutions in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Nineteen OutLists were identified in the United States; no OutLists were identified in other countries. All OutLists in the United States were identified at allopathic institutions with no institutional religious affiliation.…
Biopiracy and the right to self-determination of indigenous peoples.
2018
Abstract Background: Since over thirty years, I work on the unclear legal situation of in which indigenous peoples find themselves today in the beginning mainly in the USA and later also in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The status of indigenous people and native nations is characterized as a mixture of national and international law. Hypothesis/Purpose: To clarify the status of indigenous people it is necessary to analyze and interpret carefully hundreds of old treaties, international declarations and covenants, national statutes and jurisprudence, especially the old leading decisions of the US-Supreme Court. Such an analysis and interpretation should prove that indigenous people have …
Kanādas reāliju etimoloģiskā analīze
2015
Pētījuma mērķis ir analizēt Britu Kolumbijas kultūras reālijas. Aprakstoša pētījuma metode ir izvēlēta,lai sasniegtu izvirzītu mērķi un atbildētu uz pētījuma jautājumiem. Pētījums sastāv no divām galvenajām daļām. Pētījuma teorētisko daļu attēlo divas nodaļas. pirmā nodaļa fokusējas uz dažādām kultūras reāliju klasifikācijas pieejām. Otrā nodaļa ir domāta toponīmu pētījuma esoša korpusa apspriedei un mēģinājumiem klasificēt Kanādas toponīmus. Trešā nodaļa, kas ir pašreizējā pētījuma empīriskā daļa, ietver izvēlēto Kanādas reāliju piemēru etimoloģijas apspriedi. Pētījums rādīja, ka Britu Kolumbija pārsvarā ir attēlota ar sociāliem toponīmiem Lonely Planet ceļvedī. Turklāt, eiropiešu Kanādas …
