REDUCED UPTAKE OF Cd AND Pb BY Miscanthus sinensis x giganteus CULTIVATED ON POLLUTED SOIL AND ITS USE AS BIOFUEL
2013
Aided phytostabilization using Miscanthus sinensis×giganteus on heavy metal-contaminated soils
2013
Abstract A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the use of red mud, a by-product of the alumina industry, as a soil amendment on highly contaminated soils in the vicinity of a former Pb–Zn smelter in Copșa Mica (Romania). Changes in the distribution of Zn, Cd and Pb in various soil fractions, mobility of heavy metals in the soil, and their uptake and effects on growth and productivity of Miscanthus sinensis × giganteus were evaluated. Uptake of Zn, Cd and Pb was determined in different tissues of M. sinensis × giganteus cultivated in field plots situated at increasing distance from the pollution source and with different levels of contamination and metal availabilities. Soluble meta…
Granuloma piógeno en tapones lagrimales smart plug
2007
Organics in soda-anthraquinone black liquors from hot-water-extracted non-wood feedstocks
2019
The chemical compositions of black liquors (BLs) obtained from the soda-anthraquinone (AQ) pulping of untreated and hot-water-extracted non-wood feedstocks (okra stalk, miscanthus stalk, and wheat straw) were determined. These under-utilized renewable and widely available feedstocks could provide a cheaper source for producing fiber and precursors for manufacturing green chemicals. These BLs were mainly characterized in terms of carbohydrate-derived volatile carboxylic acids (acetic and formic acids) and non-volatile carboxylic acids (hydroxy acids) as well as lignin. Additionally, in each case, the average molar mass and molar mass distribution of the dissolved lignin were measured. Result…
Growth impacts in a changing ocean: insights from two coral reef fishes in an extreme environment
2020
AbstractDetermining the life history consequences for fishes living in extreme and variable environments will be vital in predicting the likely impacts of ongoing climate change on reef fish demography. Here, we compare size-at-age and maximum body size of two common reef fish species (Lutjanus ehrenbergiiandPomacanthus maculosus) between the environmentally extreme Arabian/Persian Gulf (‘Arabian Gulf’) and adjacent comparably benign Oman Sea. Additionally, we use otolith increment width profiles to investigate the influence of temperature, salinity and productivity on the individual growth rates. Individuals of both species showed smaller size-at-age and lower maximum size in the Arabian G…
Expanded forehead (Fricke) flap for large defect of lateral canthal area
1993
The use of an expanded forehead (Fricke) flap to repair large full thickness defects of the lateral canthus and/or of the upper eyelid is presented. The reconstruction is performed in two stages. In the first stage, a rectangular, 25 ml tissue expander (6 cm in width and 2 cm in length) is inserted under the skin lateral to and above the eyebrow; expansion is completed in about three weeks. At the second stage, the lesion is excised, and the laterally based expanded flap is elevated. Using the expanded Fricke flap, thinner, abundant skin is obtained, and the donor site is directly closed, without grafting and without distorting the eyebrow. If there is a shortage of conjunctiva, this can be…
Analytical pyrolysis of wood and non-wood materials from integrated biorefinery concepts
2019
Wood and non-wood differ with respect to their anatomical, physical, and chemical properties, even among their species, resulting in different behaviors during thermal conversion. Hence, understanding the degradation of these feedstocks by pyrolysis is attractive to establish biorefinery possibilities for renewable resources. Additionally, biomass pretreatment technology plays an important role in many biorefinery processes. Therefore, an approach that integrates such pretreatment with pyrolysis offers an attractive, novel method for improving the end-product spectrum (e.g., enriched either with aliphatic or aromatic constituents). Furthermore, a rapid analytical method for biomass feedstoc…
