Eosinophilic Meningitis due toAngiostrongylus cantonensisin Germany
2009
We report a case of eosinophilic meningitis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis in a patient who returned from Thailand. The presence of a compatible epidemiologic history and eosinophilia in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lead to the diagnosis, which was confirmed by detection of specific antibodies. After treatment with albendazole and corticosteroids he recovered completely.
An Ultrasonic Lens Design Based on Prefractal Structures
2016
The improvement in focusing capabilities of a set of annular scatterers arranged in a fractal geometry is theoretically quantified in this work by means of the finite element method (FEM). Two different arrangements of rigid rings in water are used in the analysis. Thus, both a Fresnel ultrasonic lens and an arrangement of rigid rings based on Cantor prefractals are analyzed. Results show that the focusing capacity of the modified fractal lens is better than the Fresnel lens. This new lens is believed to have potential applications for ultrasonic imaging and medical ultrasound fields.
Self-similar focusing with generalized devil's lenses
2011
[EN] We introduce the generalized devil's lenses (GDLs) as a new family of diffractive kinoform lenses whose structure is based on the generalized Cantor set. The focusing properties of different members of this family are analyzed. It is shown that under plane wave illumination the GDLs give a single main focus surrounded by many subsidiary foci. It is shown that the total number of subsidiary foci is higher than the number of foci corresponding to conventional devil's lenses; however, the self-similar behavior of the axial irradiance is preserved to some extent. Introduzione ad Arte : Artworks, mimesis, agency
2021

IFS attractors and Cantor sets
2006
Abstract We build a metric space which is homeomorphic to a Cantor set but cannot be realized as the attractor of an iterated function system. We give also an example of a Cantor set K in R 3 such that every homeomorphism f of R 3 which preserves K coincides with the identity on K.
Determinants of the Mating Success of Polyterritorial Pied Flycatcher Males
2010
Much attention has been paid to the polyterritorial mating system of some passerine birds. Here we report how a male's mating success is related to the behavioral traits of polyterritorial pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) males. We found no evidence that the timing of polyterritoriality in relation to egg laying in the primary nest or the singing behavior of males have any influence on mating success. However, results show clearly that male mating success was improved with an increase in the distance between territories up to a distance of about 200–300 m whereupon there was no further enhancement of mating success. This finding is crucial for both the deception hypothesis and female-fe…

Axial behaviour of Cantor ring diffractals
2003
Cantor ring diffractals describe rotationally symmetric pupils constructed from a one-dimensional polyadic Cantor set. The influence on the axial irradiance of several fractal descriptors of such pupils, including fractal dimension, number of gaps and lacunarity, are investigated. It is shown that, contrary to their transversal response, the axial behaviour of these pupils does not resemble the fractal structure of the aperture. The sensitivity of such pupils to the spherical aberration is also analysed.
„Kantor Chrystusa eucharystycznego” – św. Tomasz z Akwinu w przepowiadaniu do dzieci z okazji uroczystości Pierwszej Komunii Świętej
2021
