The impact of thermophysical properties and hysteresis effects on the energy performance simulation of PCM wallboards: Experimental studies, modellin…

2020

Abstract This paper presents a combined experimental and numerical procedure, developed to test the thermophysical behaviour of a real scale PCM wallboard, aiming at providing reliable data for the validation of building energy performance simulation tools. Data obtained from two experimental tests, conducted on real building elements integrating PCM undergoing complete and incomplete phase change, are considered for assessing the impact of thermal properties and hysteresis. A comprehensive comparative numerical analysis, performed by means of an in-house developed simulation tool, called DETECt, is carried out to investigate the reliability of several modelling and simulation approaches av…

Features of Thermal Properties of Ferroelectric PLZT Ceramics in the Region of Phase Transition

2011

A study of specific heat and thermal expansion of PLZT-9/65/35 ceramics in the 150– 800 K range of temperatures is reported. Specific diffused features in behaviour of heat capacity and thermal expansion are revealed in the 250–650 K and 330–550 K range of temperature, respectively, and shown to be the result of the growth and changes of a system of ordering nano-size polarised regions. The features of heat capacity in the 250–650 K range of temperature are found to be related to two-level states (the Schottky anomaly). Obtained results are discussed together with data of structural and dielectric studies.

Teleportation-induced correlated quantum channels.

2009

Quantum teleportation of a n-qubit state performed using as entangled resource a general bipartite state of 2n qubits instead of n Bell states is equivalent to a correlated Pauli channel. This provides a new characterization of such channels in terms of many-body correlation functions of the teleporting media. Our model is then generalized to the Continuous Variable case. We show that this new representation provides a relatively simple method for determining whether a correlated quantum channel is able to reliably convey quantum messages by studying the entanglement properties of the teleportation mediating system.

Structure-property relations in the distorted ordered double perovskite Sr2InReO6

2011

The rock-salt ordered type double perovskite Sr${}_{2}$InReO${}_{6}$ is systematically investigated by means of powder x-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction, temperature-dependent electrical transport, heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, and electronic band structure calculations. The crystal structure of Sr${}_{2}$InReO${}_{6}$ is revised to be monoclinic (cryolite structure type, space group $P$2${}_{1}$/$n$) with all structural distortions according to the high-symmetry aristotype due to tilting of the InO${}_{6}$ and ReO${}_{6}$ octahedra, respectively. Sr${}_{2}$InReO${}_{6}$ is a Mott insulator with variable-range hopping. Two 5$d$ electrons are unpaired an…

Transition behavior in the channel capacity of two-quibit channels with memory

2004

We prove that a general upper bound on the maximal mutual information of quantum channels is saturated in the case of Pauli channels with an arbitrary degree of memory. For a subset of such channels we explicitly identify the optimal signal states. We show analytically that for such a class of channels entangled states are indeed optimal above a given memory threshold.

The relative role of EUV radiation and X-rays in the heating of hydrogen-rich exoplanet atmospheres

2009

Aims. We study the relative role of EUV and X-ray radiation in the heating of hydrogen-rich planet atmospheres with different composition and electron content. Methods. An accurate photo-ionization model has been used to follow the primary photo-electron energy deposition throughout the atmosphere. Results. Heating rates and efficiencies have been computed, together with column density cut-offs at which photons of given energies stop their heating production inside the atmosphere. Assuming 100 eV as the energy borderline between the extreme ultraviolet spectral range and X-rays we find that when the absorbing hydrogen column density is higher than 10 20 cm −2 only X-rays can heat the gas. Can entanglement be extracted from many body systems?

2007

Some thermodynamical properties of solids, such as heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility, have recently been shown to be linked to the amount of entanglement in a solid. Until now, however, it was not clear whether this entanglement can be used as a resource in quantum information theory. Here we show that this entanglement is physical, demonstrating the principles of its extraction from a typical spin chain by scattering two particles off the system. Moreover, we show how to simulate this process using present-day optical lattice technology. © 2007 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Ultrametricity property of energy landscapes of multidisperse packing problems

2009

We consider the problem of finding the densest closed packing of hard disks with proposed different radii in a circular environment, such that the radius of the circumcircle is minimal. The subspace of the quasioptimum configurations of this problem exhibits the property of ultrametricity.

Approximate quantum error correction for generalized amplitude damping errors

2014

We present analytic estimates of the performances of various approximate quantum error correction schemes for the generalized amplitude damping (GAD) qubit channel. Specifically, we consider both stabilizer and nonadditive quantum codes. The performance of such error-correcting schemes is quantified by means of the entanglement fidelity as a function of the damping probability and the non-zero environmental temperature. The recovery scheme employed throughout our work applies, in principle, to arbitrary quantum codes and is the analogue of the perfect Knill-Laflamme recovery scheme adapted to the approximate quantum error correction framework for the GAD error model. We also analytically re…

Creating quantum correlations through local non-unitary memoryless channels

2012

We show that two qubits, initially in a fully classical state, can develop significant quantum correlations as measured by the quantum discord (QD) under the action of a local memoryless noise (specifically we consider the case of a Markovian amplitude-damping channel). This is analytically proven after deriving in a compact form the QD for the class of separable states involved in such a process. We provide a picture in the Bloch sphere that unambiguously highlights the physical mechanism behind the effect regardless of the specific measure of QCs adopted.
