Introduction : language, work and affective capitalism

2022

Abstract This special issue contributes to scholarship on language and affective economy by exploring the role played by affect in shaping work and workers under current configurations of capitalism. We take as a starting point the observation of increased valorisation and instrumentalisation of affect in the contemporary phase of capitalism. In this editorial introduction to the special issue, we set the scene by first outlining our questions, aims and objectives. Subsequently, we situate the contribution made by this issue in a larger social theorisation of affect and capitalism, particularly the notion of affective capitalism, and reflect on how this theorisation can contribute to sociol…

The Allegory of Holocaust

2017

The current bloody conflict between Israelis and Palestine in Middle East has widely approached by social scientists and humanists as a moral campaign to impose the human dignity. Although in some respect, literature would play a leading role in narrowing both sides, the fact is that in digital times Holocaust is far from being a closed issue. As a platform towards victimization or political oppression, Holocaust still remains in the heart of West as well as the negative effects of depersonalizing subject identities. The nature of any genocide is associated to the power of Gods to select who lives or not, in the same way, Noah abode the decision of God to destroy a world which unfits with h…

Institutional systems inducing R&D in Amazon- the role of an investor surplus toward stakeholder capitalization

2020

Abstract Amazon demonstrated a conspicuous increase in R&D and became the world's top R&D firm in 2017 with a skyrocketing increase in market capitalization, making it close to being the world's biggest company. Such a remarkable accomplishment can be attributed to Amazon's institutional systems, which orchestrate techno-financing systems that fuse a unique R&D transformation system and a sophisticated financing system centered on the cash conversion cycle (CCC). These institutional systems support and endorse aggressive investment in R&D that incorporates the characteristics of uncertainty, a long lead time, and successive inflows of very large amounts of funding without interruption. Whil…

Subalternità e filosofia della storia. Appunti sul carteggio Marx-Zasulič

2021

this article proposes, through the Gramscian political-pedagogical category of subalternity, a reading of the brief exchange of letters at the beginning of 1881 between Karl Marx and Vera Zasulič, a russian revolutionary militant at that time member of the populist group Čërnyj peredel (black repartition), on an issue of great importance for the russian socialist movement: the obščina, or that specific form of common ownership of land by russian peasants. to this end, it is necessary to analyze the chapter XXiV of the first book of Capital, in which Marx outlines the historical genesis of capitalism in Western europe and, in particular, in england, through the phenomenon of «the so-called o…

The Birth of the Queen/the Modern Homosexual: Historical Explanations Revisited

1997

In this paper I review a number of explanations for the emergence of the modern homosexual category in Western (mainly Northwest European) cultures. I suggest there are four different emphases in respect of the social and cultural factors given priority in interpretations of the formation of the homosexual category. Of course, individual studies have often taken into consideration more than one single factor (most notably, Greenberg, 1988; Chauncey, 1994), and the grouping of previous studies that I here suggest only indicates where the focus of a given study is. The social and cultural factors emphasized in these four approaches are: 1) the effects of competitive capitalism on the bourgeo…

The Dark Society

2020

Ulrich Beck, a German sociologist who does not need previous presentation, casts his diagnosis about risk society as a new emerging ethos where social class and hierarchies blurred before the figure of risk. Although he shed light on the post-industrial society of the 90s, today the society he studied seems to be pretty different. Hence, a new fresh insight should replace it. This article introduces readers to the conceptual foundations of Thana Capitalism, as it was critically debated in our book The Rise of Thana Capitalism and Tourism. Per the author's conception, the risk society sets the pace to a new facet of capitalism where the other's pain remains as the main commodity to exchange.…
