Is Bactra bactrana (Kennel, 1901) a novel pest of sweet peppers?

AbstractThis is the first report of Bactra bactrana (Kennel, 1901) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) attacking a major solanaceous crop, sweet pepper Capsicum annuum L. The infestation was detected in two greenhouses at the area of Tympaki (Southern Crete, Greece). The moth larvae caused typical symptoms of a fruit borer with numerous small holes on the surface of the peppers and extensive damage on the inside of the fruit as a result of the feeding activity. Unknown factors facilitated this major shift in host range since B. bactrana is typically a stem borer of sedges. There is a need to develop sensitive and accurate analytical methods for determining deoxynivalenol (DON), HT-2 toxin and T-2 toxin in paprika to properly assess the relevant risk of human exposure. An optimized analytical method for determination of HT-2 toxin and T-2 toxin using capillary gas chromatography with electron capture detection and another method for determination of DON by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry in paprika was developed. An automated, confirmatory and sensitive procedure has been developed and validated for the determination of Sudan (I-IV), Sudan Orange G, Sudan Red 7B and Para Red in hot chilli food samples. The proposed method includes pressurised liquid extraction (PLE) with acetone, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) clean-up and detection by liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to electrospray ionization in positive mode tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS-MS). Mycobiota and co-occurrence of mycotoxins in Capsicum powder

This study aimed to: (1) determine the mycobiota of Capsicum powder samples, paying a special attention to the mycotoxigenic moulds; (2) evaluate the contamination levels of aflatoxins (AF), ochratoxin A (OTA), zearalenone (ZEA), deoxynivalenol (DON), T2 and HT2 toxins in those samples. Thirty-two samples were obtained through the methods of sampling established by the European Union legislation. Aspergillus and Eurotium were the most frequently found genera. Improvement of the nitrogen uptake induced by Ti(IV) supply in nitrogen stressed pepper crops

The beneficial effect of titanium on plant metabolism can result in a more profitable use of fertilizers on many crops. An experiment was performed in a greenhouse with Capsicum annuum L. cv. Bunejo plants cultivated under different levels of nitrogen fertilization: 100% N — 250 N fertilizer units/ha (NFU); 75% N - 187.5 NFU; 50% N - 125 NFU; 25% N - 62.5 NFU. A third of the plants in each N support remained Ti-untreated and were used as a reference. Each of the other thirds received one and two 2 mg Ti/l, pH 6, leaf spray treatments respectively (35 ml/plant). Leaf spray with Ti(IV) ascorbate improves the iron uptake and iron activity in Capsicum annuum L. plants

Leaves of paprika pepper (Capsicum annuum L., cv Negral) plants sprayed with Ti(IV)-ascorbate showed an important increase of iron and titanium concentrations, as well as of the activity of peroxidase and catalase enzymatic systems. Leaf-Ti increase is similar for both greenhouse and field crop experiments, but increases in leaf Fe are more marked in plants growing under field conditions.

Purification of hydroperoxide lyase from green bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) fruits for the generation of C6-aldehydes in vitro.

The aim of this work was to compare the efficiency of different extracts of hydroperoxide lyase from green bell peppers in producing aldehydes: a crude extract, a chloroplastic fraction, and a purified enzyme were investigated. From a crude extract, the HPO lyase was purified by ion-exchange chromatography with a 22.3-fold increase in purification factor. Analysis by SDS-PAGE electrophoresis under denaturating conditions showed only one protein with a molecular weight of 55 kDa, whereas size-exclusion chromatography indicated a molecular weight of 170 kDa.
