Transient expression of synaptogyrin in the ganglionic eminence of the human fetal brain

2000

Summary The ganglionic eminence (GE) representing a conspicuous bulb-like elevation of the telencephalic proliferative zone has recently been shown to be involved in the establishment of cortical connections. This study demonstrates the presence of synaptogyrin-immunoreactivity in a large number of cell bodies of the human GE between 12 and 20 weeks of gestation. From the 20 th week onwards synaptogyrin expression sharply declines. No immunoreactive structures are detectable in the 23 rd week or later. As the GE persists nearly throughout the entire fetal period these results show that its neurochemical features change distinctly in the course of development. The synaptogyrin-immunoreactive…

Histopathologic Findings in Early Encapsulated Blebs of Young Patients Treated With the Ahmed Glaucoma Valve

2010

Objective/aim Uncontrolled glaucoma presents a challenge for the ophthalmic surgeon especially in children and juvenile patients. For many patients who have undergone failed surgical procedures before, episcleral implants remain the last choice. Encapsulated blebs forming over antiglaucoma devices present a complication leading to malfunctioning or even failure with reincrease in intraocular pressure. We report our histopathologic findings of such blebs developing around the Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) after a short time period in young patients. Materials and methods Nine young patients (2 to 17 y of age) with otherwise uncontrollable glaucoma were treated with AGV (models FP-7 and FP-8, si…

Lipid profile of tenon's capsule in glaucoma patients

2009

International audience; Purpose: To provide data on the lipid profile of the Tenon’s capsule in Human glaucomatous eyes and to establish possible relationships with the short term outcome of filtration surgery. Methods: Fragments of Tenon’s capsule were collected during glaucoma surgery in patients suffering from open angle glaucoma (10 trabeculectomies and 17 non penetrating deep sclerectomies). The lipid profile of the human samples was determined by gas chromatography. A successful outcome after glaucoma surgery was defined by an intraocular pressure (IOP) ≤ 15 mmHg at 6 months without any IOP‐lowering agent. Results: We included 27 patients (12 males, 15 females) with a mean age of 65.5…

Computertomographie der Nieren nach Tumorenukleation

1994

Two weeks to 120 months after enucleation of renal tumours the postoperative defects were correctly localized by renal computed tomography in 34 patients. Typical defect morphology was either wedge-shaped or concave. No dependence on tumour localization, tumour size, operative technique or a certain surgeon was observed. The cortical defects were smaller (mean 2.0 cm) than the original, prominent tumours (mean 3.4 cm). In small defects without tension suture of the capsule is sufficient, leading to minor defects. Larger defects were closed with a retroperitoneal or free peritoneal fat flap resulting in larger residual defects. In case of intra- or postoperative bleeding, CT could demonstrat…

Spring constants of capsular tension rings.

2004

Purpose To determine the spring constants of several types of capsular tension rings (CTRs). Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. Methods Fourteen models of CTRs provided by 9 companies were tested; all were 11.0 mm in diameter. The CTRs were positioned in a special retainer of a material-testing machine and compressed at a constant speed of 10.0 mm per minute. The distance and force values were recorded, and each CTR model was tested 3 times using a new specimen each time. The resulting measurements were used to calculate a mean spring constant for each CTR model. Results All tested CTRs showed linear proportionality between force and compress…

Nanocapsules generated out of a polymeric dexamethasone shell suppress the inflammatory response of liver macrophages.

2012

Abstract Dexamethasone (DXM) is a synthetic glucocorticoid with anti-inflammatory properties. Targeted delivery of dexamethasone to inflammatory cells, e.g. macrophages and Kupffer cells represents a promising approach to minimize side effects. The aim of the present study was to induce a targeted transport of novel DXM-based biodegradable nanocapsules to phagocytic cells. Nanocapsules (NCs) consisting of a hydroxyethylated glucose polymer (hydroxyethyl starch, HES) shell with encapsulated DXM and NCs synthesized exclusively in inverse miniemulsion out of DXM were investigated. Non-parenchymal murine liver cells served as target cells. HES-DXM NCs were predominantly incorporated by Kupffer …

Cardiorenal Fat: A Cardiovascular Risk Factor With Implications in Chronic Kidney Disease.

2021

There is a growing interest in the potential role of adipose tissues in cardiac and renal pathophysiology, and determining the mechanisms by which fat compartments around the heart and kidneys influence cardiovascular disease is of clinical importance in both general and high-risk populations. Epicardial fat and perirenal fat have been associated with adverse outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Epicardial fat is a rich source of free fatty acids and is capable of secreting inflammatory and pro-atherogenic cytokines that promote atherosclerosis through a local paracrine effect. Recent evidence has demonstrated that perirenal fat has a closer correlation with kidney diseases th…

A case of splenic rupture: A rare event after laparoscopic cholecystectomy

2014

Background Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is generally safe and well-accepted. In rare cases, it is associated with complications (intra- e postoperative bleeding, visceral injury and surgical site infection). Splenic lesion has been reported only after direct trauma. We report an unusual case of splenic rupture presenting after “uncomplicated” LC. Case presentation A 77-year-old woman presented with distended abdomen, tenderness in the left upper quadrant and severe anemia 12 hours after LC. Clinical examination revealed hypovolemic shock. Abdominal computed tomography confirmed the diagnosis of splenic rupture, and the patient required an urgent splenectomy through midline incision. Th…

The use of nephrometry scoring systems can help urologists predict the risk of conversion to radical nephrectomy in patients scheduled for partial ne…

2019

Conversion to radical nephrectomy (RN) in patients scheduled for partial nephrectomy (PN) is an important outcome that should be strongly considered during the decision-making process and adequately discussed with patients during their preoperative counseling. This unplanned event could be due to severe intraoperative complications or oncologic reasons. Intraoperative suspicion of hilar and/or perirenal fat tissue involvement, peritumoral venous involvement, tumor multifocality and/or iatrogenic rupture of the tumor are the most common conditions threatening the oncological safety of the procedure.

Physical activity predicts population-level age-related differences in frontal white matter

2018

AbstractPhysical activity has positive effects on brain health and cognitive function throughout the lifespan. Thus far, few studies have examined the effects of physical activity on white matter (WM) microstructure and psychomotor speed within the same, population-based sample (critical if conclusions are to extend to the wider population). Here, using diffusion tensor imaging and a simple reaction time task within a relatively large population-derived sample (N = 399; 18–87 years) from the Cambridge Centre for Ageing and Neuroscience (Cam-CAN), we demonstrate that physical activity mediates the effect of age on white matter integrity, measured with fractional anisotropy. Higher self-repor…
