Two seas, two lineages: How genetic diversity is structured in Atlantic and Mediterranean greater amberjack Seriola dumerili Risso, 1810 (Perciformes…

2016

The vastness of the ocean and our limited ability to observe and monitor the organisms therein make molecular markers particularly useful tools in the investigation of the ecology and evolutionary biology of fish. Nowadays, due to increased demand of fish foods, genetic researches are focused on new candidate species for aquaculture, such as Seriola species. Here, the analyses of eight polymorphic nuclear microsatellites loci and three mitochondrial (mt) DNA genes (16S-rRNA, Cyt-b, and D-Loop) in the greater amberjack, Seriola dumerili, detected breakpoint between Atlantic and Mediterranean populations, presumably arisen by the oceanographic features of the Almeria-Oran Front opposed to the…

Influence of fish aggregating devices (FADs) on anti-predator behaviour within experimental mesocosms

2015

Commercial fishers have used fish aggregating devices throughout the Mediterranean Sea for over 40 years. These devices attract numerous predatory and forage species in both coastal and offshore environments. This study examined the influence of fish aggregating devices on schooling and aggregating behaviour by small forage fish in quasi-natural mesocosms. Anti-predator behaviour was evaluated for juvenile Caranx crysos under a variety of treatment conditions. Results suggest that, in the absence of physical structure, C. crysos first respond to a predatory threat by forming a school. When a physical structure is present, however, C. crysos show an occasional tendency to aggregate near the …

Chromosomal polymorphism associated with Robertsonian fusion in Seriola dumerili (Risso, 1810) (Pisces: Carangidae)

1986

The diploid numbers 2n= 48, and 2n= 47 have been determined for the greater amberjack, Seriola dumerili. A chromosome polymorphism due to Robertsonian fusion is present in this species. A simple sex-determining mechanism has not been observed.

Effects of the gill parasite Zeuxapta seriolae (Monogenea: Heteraxinidae) on the amberjack Seriola dumerili Risso (Teleostei: Carangidae)

2004

Zeuxapta seriolae (Monogenea: Heteraxinidae) infection was associated with important mortalities of amberjacks (Seriola dumerili) reared in tanks in the experimental facilities of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (Western Mediterranean) during the period 1998–2000. Fish infested by this parasite presented characteristics similar to those described for Seriola quinqueradiata parasitized by Heteraxine heterocerca in Japan. All dead amberjacks had high parasite abundance (mean abundance±S.D.=686.7±125.4) and egg strings entangled in gills. The parasitological analysis of 17 live amberjacks collected from the infested tanks showed that 41.2% of fish harboured Z. seriolae with intensities r…

REDESCRIPTION OF ALLENCOTYLA MCINTOSHI PRICE, 1962 (MONOGENEA), WITH AN EMENDED DIAGNOSIS OF ALLENCOTYLA PRICE, 1962

2003

The original description of the type species of Allencotyla, A. mcintoshi Price, 1962, was based on 5 specimens collected from 1 amberjack Seriola lalandi in Florida. In this study, A. mcintoshi is redescribed based on new specimens collected from juvenile greater amberjacks S. dumerili captured off the Spanish Mediterranean coast and maintained in experimental culture tanks. Except for a slightly smaller size, individuals of S. dumerili were morphologically similar to the type specimens. However, reexamination of the type material and examination of the new specimens revealed the following discrepancies with respect to the original description: (1) the vaginal pore is unarmed and covered w…

Girdles as the main infection site for Paradeontacylix kampachi (Sanguinicolidae) in the greater amberjack Seriola dumerili.

2003

In this study, we provide new information about the habitats selected by the blood fluke Paradeontacylix kampachi in the greater amberjack Seriola dumerili based on an exhaustive anatomical examination. From May to October 1998, 21 fish of the 0+ age class were collected from tanks of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography in Puerto de Mazarrón, Spain, for parasitological analysis. Individuals of P. kampachi were found in 17 of the 21 fish analysed (mean intensity +/- SD: 13.6 +/- 16.6; median: 6). Worms occurred in the girdles, cephalic kidney, sinus venosus, kidney and branchial arteries. A Friedman test with a post-hoc contrast revealed a significantly higher number of worms in the girdle…

Cultivation of the Mediterranean amberjack, Seriola dumerili (Risso, 1810), in submerged cages in the Western Mediterranean Sea

2000

The growth rate, survival and food conversion ratio (FCR) of the Mediterranean amberjack (Seriola dumerili, Risso, 1810) was ascertained in cultivation using submerged net cages in the Gulf of Castellammare (NW Sicily), from September to December 1994. Two net cages (volume = 75 m3) were placed at a depth of 10 m in a sheltered area 1000 m off the coast. Juveniles (mean total length = 141.4 ± 34 2 mm; mean total wet weight = 48 ± 28.1 g) were caught in the gulf under floating wreckage with a purse seine and transplanted to the cages (n = 800 per cage) in August. Fish in one cage, group A, were fed with fish scraps whilst fish in group B were fed with pellets The total length and body wet we…

Development and habitat selection of a new sanguinicolid parasite of cultured greater amberjack, Seriola dumerili, in the Mediterranean

2009

Abstract This study presents a description of the developmental stages of a new sanguinicolid disease agent (Paradeontacylix ibericus) of cultured Seriola dumerili (greater amberjack) in the Mediterranean, and investigates parasite habitat selection in the definitive host and the development of sanguinicolidosis in experimental, inshore cultures of S. dumerili . Two experimental surveys were carried out using fish captured as wild 0+ juveniles in the aquaculture facilities at Puerto de Mazarron (Spain). Encysted, early post-cercarial stages (schistosomula) were detected in histological sections of the pelvic and thoracic muscles of fish and four subsequent stages of parasite development wer…

Seasonal population dynamics of Zeuxapta seriolae (Monogenea: Heteraxinidae) parasitising Seriola dumerili (Carangidae) in the Western Mediterranean.

2013

We examined the seasonal and yearly population dynamics of the monogenean pathogen Zeuxapta seriolae on juvenile fish from wild populations of Seriola dumerili. The study is based on bimonthly monitoring between April, 2005 and April, 2007 off Majorca, and newly obtained monogenean population data for juvenile fish from three additional localities in the Western Mediterranean (off Alicante, Corsica and Sardinia). We documented the highest intensities and abundances of Z. seriolae, with mean abundance values similar to or higher than those reported in the single case of wild fish mortalities reported to date. There was a recurrent pattern of seasonal change in infection with Z. seriolae in t…
