We have recently shown that synoviocytes and extracellular matrices exhibit distinct patterns of carbohydrate expression. Their biological relevance is however not known. The purpose of the present study was to find out whether human synovial tissue would also show a specific receptor pattern for complex sugar molecules. The carbohydrate specificities of Ascidia malaca serum hemagglutinins were determined by hemagglutination inhibition tests. Analysis of agglutinins against rabbit and human A, B, O erythrocytes suggests that the size of the combining site corresponds to a disaccharide with a specificity for saccharides containing a D-galacto configuration (D-melibiose, D-raffinose, D-galactose, alpha-lactose, lactulose, L-arabinose). Single nucleotide polymorphisms near the Ink4/Arf locus have been associated with type-2 diabetes mellitus. Previous studies indicate a protective role of the locus in the carbohydrate metabolism derangement associated with ageing in wild-type mice. The present study demonstrates that the increased Ink4/Arf locus expression in 1-year-old mice, partially-deficient for the insulin receptor substrate (IRS)2 (Irs2 +/-SuperInk4/Arf mice) ameliorates hepatic steatosis, inflammation and insulin resistance. The present communication deals with the effect of fenitrothion (0.04 ppm) on the carbohydrate metabolism of the european eel Anguilla anguilla and its recovery from intoxication. Analysis of various parameters such as glycogen, lactate and glucose was made on different eel tissues after 2, 8, 12, 24, 32, 48, 56, 72 and 96 hr of fenitrothion exposure. Subsequently, the fish were allowed recovery periods of 8, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 144 and 192 hr in clean water, and the same parameters were evaluated.
