Alkyl and aryl substituted corroles. 3. Reactions of cofacial cobalt biscorroles and porphyrin-corroles with pyridine and carbon monoxide.
2002
The synthesis and characterization of three new cofacial biscorroles and three new linked Co(II) porphyrins and Co(III) corroles with the same face to face orientation are described. The biscorroles are represented as (BCS)Co(2), (BCO)Co(2), (BCX)Co(2) while the porphyrin-corrole dyads are represented as (PCA)Co(2), (PCB)Co(2), (PCO)Co(2) where BC represents the Co(III) cofacial biscorroles and PC represents the porphyrin-corrole complexes which are linked to each other by a dibenzothiophene (S), dibenzofuran (O), or 9,9-dimethylxanthene (X) bridge in the case of the corroles and an anthracene (A), biphenylene (B), or dibenzofuran (O) bridge in the case of the mixed macrocycle derivatives. …
Light-Induced Protein-Matrix Uncoupling and Protein Relaxation in Dry Samples of Trehalose-Coated MbCO at Room Temperature
2005
In humid samples of trehalose-coated carboxy-myoglobin (MbCO), thermally driven conformational relaxation takes place after photodissociation of the carbon monoxide (CO) molecule at room temperature. In such samples, because of the extreme viscosity of the external matrix, photodissociated CO cannot diffuse out of the protein and explores the whole (proximal and distal side) heme pocket, experiencing averaged protein heme pocket structures, as a result of the presence of Brownian motions. At variance, in very dry samples, a lower portion of the photodissociated CO diffuses from the distal to the proximal heme pocket side probing in nonaveraged structures. We revisit here the flash photolysi…
The oxygen status of arterial human blood
1990
The oxygen status of arterial human blood is described at least by four variables: Oxygen partial pressure (pO2, mmHg), oxygen saturation (sO2, %), hemoglobin content (cHb, g/dL) and oxygen content (cO2, mL/dL). Beside perfusion, however, the oxygen supply of all organs is decisively determined by the mean capillary pO2 which itself is primarily dependent on the arterial cO2. Therefore, the oxygen availability (cardiac output x caO2, mL/min) may be described by the cO2 value in arterial blood or those variables who determine the latter one. The diagnostic significance of the O2 variables of the oxygen status consequently increases in the order of pO2, sO2 (cHb) and cO2. In arterial blood, o…
Carbon Monoxide Protects Against Ischemia-reperfusion Injury in Vitro via Antioxidant Properties
2012
Carbon monoxide (CO) is believed to mediate many of the cytoprotective effects attributed to the activation of heme oxygenase (HO-1), the enzyme responsible for CO production. Recently, the study of CO-releasing molecules (CO-RMs) has provided a new approach for the delivery of CO. In the present study, we examined whether the cardioprotective properties of CO-RM2 in isolated rat hearts subjected to an ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) sequence were associated with the presence of CO. In addition, the antioxidant properties of CO-RM2 were evaluated. In hearts pretreated with CO-RM2, the improvement in contractile function at the end of the reperfusion period after 20 min of global total ischemia w…
The Carbon Monoxide-Releasing Molecule Tricarbonyldichlororuthenium(II) Dimer Protects Human Osteoarthritic Chondrocytes and Cartilage from the Catab…
2008
We have investigated the effects of a carbon monoxide-releasing molecule, tricarbonyldichlororuthenium(II) dimer (CORM-2), on catabolic processes in human osteoarthritis (OA) cartilage and chondrocytes activated with interleukin-1beta. In these cells, proinflammatory cytokines induce the synthesis of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and aggrecanases, including members of a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin domain (ADAMTS) family, which may contribute to cartilage loss. CORM-2 down-regulated MMP-1, MMP-3, MMP-10, MMP-13, and ADAMTS-5 in OA chondrocytes, and it inhibited cartilage degradation. These effects were accompanied by increased aggrecan synthesis and collagen II e…
Air Pollution and Recent Symptoms of Asthma, Allergic Rhinitis, and Atopic Eczema in Schoolchildren Aged Between 6 and 7 Years
2008
Abstract Objective The objective of the study was to analyze the relationship between air pollutants and the prevalence of recent symptoms of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic eczema in schoolchildren aged between 6 and 7 years. Patients and Methods The prevalence of recent (previous 12 months) symptoms of allergic diseases was obtained by means of the questionnaire of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC), Spain, with the participation of 7 centers (Asturias, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cartagena, La Coruna, Madrid, and Valencia) and 20 455 schoolchildren aged between 6 and 7 years, from 2002 to 2003. The pollutant detection systems of the aforementioned centers p…
Direct and indirect effects of Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) on lung function in children: A mediation analysis
2018
Background: Studies on pulmonary function tests (PFTs) in Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) children are lacking. The aims of this study were: (i) to investigate PFTs in GHD pre-pubertal children with respect to Controls, before starting Growth Hormone Therapy (GHT) (T0); (ii) to evaluate changes of PFTs in GHD vs Controls, after 1-year GHT (T1). Forboth aims the mediation analysis (MA) was applied to evaluate the extent to which the relationship between GHD and PFTs could be ascribed to a height-mediated (indirect) or a GH direct effect. Methods: 47 pre-pubertal GHD children (aged 5–14 years) underwent PFTs at T0 and T1. At T0, 47 healthy children matched for age and sex were enrolled as Contr…
Kinetic experiments on the synergistic effect of NADH on microsomal drug oxidation.
1974
Abstract1. The synergistic effect of NADH on the NADPH-dependent mixed function oxidation of p-nitroanisole and hexobarbital can be measured both photometrically and by following the substrate-induced oxygen consumption. The increase in reaction rate is about 50% and lasts as long as NADH is present in the microsomal suspension.2. The oxidation of added NADH is increased by hexobarbital, ethylmorphine and SKF 525-A. Lineweaver-Burk transformation of the NADH oxidation rates yields straight lines for xenobiotic substrates suggesting Michaelis constants similar to those obtained from metabolic experiments. NADH oxidation in the absence of NADPH is about half as rapid as in its presence.3. Som…
Selective sparing of face learning in a global amnesic patient
2001
Objective - To test the hypothesis that visual memory for faces can be dissociated from visual memory for topographical material. Method - A patient who developed a global amnesic syndrome after acute carbon monoxide poisoning is described. A neuroradiological examination documented severe bilateral atrophy of the hippocampi. Results - Despite a severe anterograde memory disorder involving verbal information, abstract figures, concrete objects, topographical scenes, and spatial information, the patient was still able to learn previously unknown human faces at a normal (and, in some cases, at a higher) rate. Conclusions - Together with previous neuropsychological evidence documenting selecti…
Detection and monitoring of carbon monoxide using cobalt corroles film on Love wave devices with delay line configuration
2011
Among specific sensitive materials synthesized for chemical sensor development, cobalt corrole have shown attractive capabilities for CO detection [1, 2]. In this paper, we investigate the possibility to exploit such materials to develop surface acoustic wave (SAW)-based sensors. We actually demonstrate that SAW devices using delay line configuration allow investigating the molecular recognition occurring in non-conductive sensing layers of cobalt corroles. We have monitored phase variations of SAW devices versus various CO concentrations. Moreover, a specific testing setup has been developed to precisely dose CO at low concentrations, to avoid any CO leakage in the environment, to systemat…
