We report one- and two-year outcomes of the Cardioband tricuspid valve reconstruction system in the treatment of ≥moderate functional TR in the TRI-REPAIR study. Several different devices have been developed for the percutaneous closure of interatrial defects and patent foramen ovale. Although the implantation of these devices is both safe and effective, a number of complications, both in the early and the late follow-up, may occur. We describe a case of device fracture manifested early (1 month after implantation) with the formation of massive thrombosis on the right atrial disc. The patient was treated with anticoagulants and the device was percutaneously retrieved. Our images allowed early noninvasive therapy and emphasize the need for echocardiographic follow-up early after implantation. © 2010 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
Relative incidence and mortality of congenital heart defects diagnosed by angiohemodynamic methods: a 17-year study.

Over a 17-year period (January 1971 to January 1988), 2322 children, aged 0-14 years, were diagnosed as having congenital heart disease (CHD) by cardiac catheterization and angiography. Excluding those with highly complex or undiagnosed defects, there were 2156 children with CHD, 72.4% of whom were treated surgically, with a total surgical mortality rate of 24.1%. After a mean follow-up of 9 years the overall mortality of the cohort was 29.9%, 29.1% occurring in the first month of life, 39.6% between 1 month and 1 year, and 31.2% between 1 and 14 years. In a 3060-g infant with fibromuscular pulmonary atresia an open right ventricular outflow tract was created by means of interventional cardiological methods. Following two inadvertent perforations without sequelae or clinical symptoms, radiofrequency perforation and subsequent balloon dilatation were successfully performed. The implantation of a Palmaz iliac stent led to a predictable communication between the right ventricle and pulmonary artery.

Intraprocedural transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) guidance plays an essential role in transcatheter repair therapy of the tricuspid valve (TV). So far, several different imaging concepts are in use. We propose an imaging protocol that fully addresses the morphological complexity of the TV and further offers efficacious workarounds for the frequently occurring restrictions of TV imaging in edge-to-edge repair of the TV. Dilated azygos arch mimicking an aortic arch anomaly during thoracic surgery

Cardiovascular malformations are frequently associated in patients with esophageal atresia (EA). We observed azygos continuation mimicking an aortic arch anomaly in four newborns with type III EA. They presented concomitant rib anomalies indicating a common developmental defect. Foreknowledge is important for planning thoracotomy or interventional cardiac catheterization in this population.
