Effects of Exergaming in Patients with Cardiovascular Disease Compared to Conventional Cardiac Rehabilitation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
2022
Background: Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs are used for improving prognosis and quality of life in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Nonetheless, adherence to these programs is low, and exercise-based CR programs based on virtual reality (i.e., exergaming) have been proposed as an alternative to conventional CR programs. However, whether exergaming programs are superior to conventional CR programs in patients with CVD is not known. Objective: This systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to explore whether exergaming enhances exercise capacity, quality of life, mental health, motivation, and exercise adherence to a greater extent than conventional CR…
Dynamic Force Production Capacities Between Coronary Artery Disease Patients vs. Healthy Participants on a Cycle Ergometer
2020
Background: The force-velocity-power (FVP) profile is used to describe dynamic force production capacities, which is of great interest in training high performance athletes. However, FVP may serve a new additional tool for cardiac rehabilitation (CR) of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. The aim of this study was to compare the FVP profile between two populations: CAD patients vs. healthy participants (HP). Methods: Twenty-four CAD patients (55.8 ± 7.1 y) and 24 HP (52.4 ± 14.8 y) performed two sprints of 8 s on a Monark cycle ergometer with a resistance corresponding to 0.4 N/kg × body mass for men and 0.3 N/kg × body mass for women. The theoretical maximal force (F 0) and velocity (V…
Endocrine Challenges in Patients with Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices
2021
Heart failure (HF) remains a leading cause of morbidity, hospitalization, and mortality worldwide. Advancement of mechanical circulatory support technology has led to the use of continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), reducing hospitalizations, and improving quality of life and outcomes in advanced HF. Recent studies have highlighted how metabolic and endocrine dysfunction may be a consequence of, or associated with, HF, and may represent a novel (still neglected) therapeutic target in the treatment of HF. On the other hand, it is not clear whether LVAD support, may impact the outcome by also improving organ perfusion as well as improving the neuro-hormonal state of the pat…
Stress, anxiety and depression in heart disease patients: A major challenge for cardiac rehabilitation
2016
International audience; Cardiovascular events and emotional disorders share a common epidemiology, thus suggesting fundamental pathways linking these different diseases. Growing evidence in the literature highlights the influence of psychological determinants in somatic diseases. A patient's socio-economic aspects, personality traits, health behavior and even biological pathways may contribute to the course of cardiovascular disease. Cardiac events often occur suddenly and the episode can be traumatic for people not prepared for such an event. In this review of the literature, the authors tackle the question of psychobiological mechanisms of stress, in a pathophysiological approach to funda…
Mental disorders and cardiovascular disease: what should we be looking out for?
2021
### Learning objectives Mental disorders are prevalent. They impair patients’ quality of life severely and are associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) and worse prognosis.1–4 Although these facts have been well established, there is still a gap in diagnostic awareness and treatment of mental disorders in patients with CVD.5–8 Therefore, we aim to educate cardiologists about the importance of mental disorders and how to address the widely unmet healthcare needs of patients with a mental disorder in their clinical practice. ### Mental disorders increase the risk for subsequent CVD All mental disorders are associated with an increased risk of developing CVD…
Biopsychosocial Profiles of Patients With Cardiac Disease in Remote Rehabilitation Processes : Mixed Methods Grounded Theory Approach
2021
Background: Digital development has caused rehabilitation services and rehabilitees to become increasingly interested in using technology as a part of rehabilitation. This study was based on a previously published study that categorized 4 groups of patients with cardiac disease based on different experiences and attitudes toward technology (e-usage groups): feeling outsider, being uninterested, reflecting benefit, and enthusiastic using. Objective: This study identifies differences in the biopsychosocial profiles of patients with cardiac disease in e-usage groups and deepen the understanding of these profiles in cardiac rehabilitation. Methods: Focus group interviews and measurements were c…
The Added Value of Remote Technology in Cardiac Rehabilitation on Physical Function, Anthropometrics, and Quality of Life: Cluster Randomized Control…
2023
Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) cause most deaths globally and can reduce quality of life (QoL) of rehabilitees with cardiac disease. The risk factors of CVDs are physical inactivity and increased BMI. With physical activity, it is possible to prevent CVDs, improve QoL, and help maintain a healthy body mass. Current literature shows the possibilities of digitalization and advanced technology in supporting independent self-rehabilitation. However, the interpretation of the results is complicated owing to the studies’ high heterogeneity. In addition, the added value of this technology has not been studied well, especially in cardiac rehabilitation. Objective We aimed to examine the…
Sydänkuntoutujien näkemyksiä minäpystyvyydestä
2018
Minäpystyvyys on Albert Banduran kehittämä käsite, joka on osa sosio-kognitiivista teoriaa. Tämä pro gradu -tutkielma tutkielma on osa Jyväskylän yliopiston, Kelan sekä Kuntoutus Peurungan yhteistä tutkimushanketta (2015-2019). Tässä tutkimuksessa on tarkoitus selvittää, millaisia näkemyksiä sydänkuntoutujilla on minäpystyvyydestä etäkuntoutuksen alussa. Tutkimuksen aineistona oli seitsemän ryhmähaastattelua, tutkittavina oli yhteensä 65 sydänkuntoutujaa. Aineistona oli 396 min haastattelua, joista kertyi 283 A4 sivua litteroitua tekstiä. Aineisto analysoitiin laadullisin menetelmin sisällönanalyysillä. Apuna aineiston luokittelussa käytettiin ATLAS.ti sisällönanalyysiohjelmaa. Sisällönanal…
