Central Obesity and Survival in Subjects With Coronary Artery Disease

2011

Objectives The aim of this study was to examine the association of central (waist circumference [WC] and waist-hip ratio [WHR]) and total obesity (body mass index [BMI]) measures with mortality in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. Background The question of which measure of obesity better predicts survival in patients with CAD is controversial. Methods We searched OVID/Medline, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and Web of Science from 1980 to 2008 and asked experts in the field for unpublished data meeting inclusion criteria, in which all subjects had: 1) CAD at baseline; 2) measures of WC or WHR; 3) mortality data; and 4) a minimum follow-up of 6 months. Results From 2,188 studies found, 6 met inclus…

Grip strength predicts cardiac adverse events in patients with cardiac disorders: an individual patient pooled meta-analysis.

2019

ObjectiveGrip strength is a well-characterised measure of weakness and of poor muscle performance, but there is a lack of consensus on its prognostic implications in terms of cardiac adverse events in patients with cardiac disorders.MethodsArticles were searched in PubMed, Cochrane Library, BioMed Central and EMBASE. The main inclusion criteria were patients with cardiac disorders (ischaemic heart disease, heart failure (HF), cardiomyopathies, valvulopathies, arrhythmias); evaluation of grip strength by handheld dynamometer; and relation between grip strength and outcomes. The endpoints of the study were cardiac death, all-cause mortality, hospital admission for HF, cerebrovascular accident…

Noninvasive Positive Pressure Ventilation in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

2010

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease of unknown origin that affects approximately 1.5 individuals per 100,000 every year; usually, these individuals are between 55 and 75 years of age [1]. ALS causes progressive weakness of voluntary muscle groups, including respiratory ones, and respiratory failure or pneumonia related to respiratory muscle weakness is the most frequent cause of death.

Is oxidative stress a therapeutic target in cardiovascular disease?

2010

An abnormal production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the subsequent decrease in vascular bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO) have long been proposed to be the common pathogenetic mechanism of the endothelial dysfunction, resulting from diverse cardiovascular risk factors such as hypercholesterolaemia, diabetes mellitus, chronic smoking, metabolic syndrome, and hypertension. Superoxide produced by the nicotinamide dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase, mitochondrial sources, or the xanthine oxidase may react with NO, thereby resulting in excessive formation of peroxynitrite, a reactive nitrogen species that has been demonstrated to accelerate the atherosclerotic process by causing d…

Recurrence quantification analysis as a tool for complex fractionated atrial electrogram discrimination

2012

International audience; Atrial fibrillation is the most encountered pathology of the heart rate. The reasons of its occurrence and its particular characteristics remain unknown, resulting from complex phenomena interaction. From these interactions emerges Complex Fractionated Atrial Electrograms (CFAE) which are useful for the ablation procedure. This study presents a method based on nonlinear data analysis, the Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA) applied on intracardiac atrial electrograms to detect CFAE particularities. The results obtained on areas previously tagged by a cardilogist show a good sensitivity to CFAE. Combination of RQA features offers a larger discrimination potential…

Studies using pharmacological blockade of muscle afferents provide new insights into the neurophysiology of perceived exertion

2016

The increase in blood pressure observed during physical activities is exaggerated in patients with hypertension, exposing them to a higher cardiovascular risk.Neural signals from the skeletal muscles appear to be overactive, resulting in this abnormal response in hypertensive patients. In the present study, we tested whether the attenuation of these neural signals in hypertensive patients could normalize their abnormal increase in blood pressure during physical activity.Attenuation of the neural signals from the leg muscles with intrathecal fentanyl injection reduced the blood pressure of hypertensive men during cycling exercise to a level comparable to that of normotensive men.Skeletal musc…

Past and present work practices of European interventional cardiologists in the context of radiation protection of the eye lens—results of the EURALO…

2018

International audience; This paper investigates over five decades of work practices in interventional cardiology, with an emphasis on radiation protection. The analysis is based on data from more than 400 cardiologists from various European countries recruited for a EURALOC study and collected in the period from 2014 to 2016. Information on the types of procedures performed and their annual mean number, fluoroscopy time, access site choice, x-ray units and radiation protection means used was collected using an occupational questionnaire. Based on the specific European data, changes in each parameter have been analysed over decades, while country-specific data analysis has allowed us to dete…

Endovascular management of the deep venous thrombosis: A new challenging role for the endovascular specialist in 2020

2020

Over the last years, the endovascular approach to the management of the acute and chronic deep vein thrombosis (DVT) has gained more and more attention from the scientific community. DVT is the third most common cardiovascular disease after coronary heart disease and stroke, with classic treatment based on anticoagulation. Recent evidences have highlighted the risk of postthrombotic syndrome as high as 30%-50% in proximal ilio-femoral lesions, with irreversible clinical symptoms and impact on the quality of life of the population. Since 2000s, the new concept of thrombus removal in the acute phase has been supported by the introduction of different techniques based on the endovascular ablat…
