Time and frequency domain analysis of long-term heart rate variability in an experimental model of diet-induced metabolic syndrome

2021

Abstract Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is defined as the set of at least three of the following conditions: central obesity, elevation of triglycerides, decreased in high-density lipoproteins, systemic hypertension and glucose intolerance. MetS is linked with a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease, including sudden cardiac death and atrial arrhythmias, which may be a consequence of changes related to the structure, function and autonomic control of the heart. One of the underlying mechanisms responsible could be the alteration of sinus node automaticity. Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is a useful non-invasive tool for evaluating alterations in neural control of cardiac au…

Leadless pacemaker implant in patients requiring CIED extraction: outcomes based upon timing of extraction

2021

Abstract Background Previous results from global Micra Transcatheter Pacemaker clinical trials have demonstrated leadless pacing as a safe and attractive option for patients with prior cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infection and extraction. Whether outcomes differ based upon the timing of prior device extraction has not been studied. Purpose To describe characteristics and outcomes of patients undergoing CIED extraction during or prior to Micra implantation. Methods Patients who underwent CIED explant and Micra implantation were identified from the Micra Post-Approval Registry and Micra Acute Performance studies. Baseline characteristics were summarized. A Fine-Gray competing…

Lower Extremity Artery Disease as a Predictor of Coronary Artery Disease

2021

Abstract Coronary artery disease (CAD) is an important determinant of long-term outcome in patients with lower extremity artery disease (LEAD). In this study we evaluated the CAD prevalence among LEAD patients and the association of LEAD lesions location with the CAD presence and severity. 203 patients with LEAD, referred for peripheral and simultaneous coronary angiography, were evaluated. LEAD and CAD were considered angiographically significant for stenosis higher than 50% of arterial lumen. More than two-thirds of LEAD patients had significant CAD, half of them having multi-vessel CAD and a quarter single CAD. Infrapoplitheal arterial lesions seemed to be the strongest predictor of CAD …

Effects of statins on low-density-lipoproteins size: a new role in cardiovascular prevention ?

2006

Cardiovascular diseases still represent the first cause of death in most of the industrialized countries. An effective prevention includes the treatment of a series of risk factors: smoking, hypertension, diabetes, obesity and dyslipidemia.1 Statins represent a class of cholesterol-lowering drugs as inhibitors of the hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase enzyme which catalyzes one of the first steps of the cholesterol metabolic pathway. This class of drugs has been used in a very large number of patients, in both primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention, for its ability to reduce clinical events linked to atherosclerosis, including acute myocardial infarction, unstable angina, c…
