Evaluation of the stromal vascular fraction of adipose tissue as the basis for a stem cell-based tissue-engineered vascular graft
2017
Abstract Objective One of the rate-limiting barriers within the field of vascular tissue engineering is the lengthy fabrication time associated with expanding appropriate cell types in culture. One particularly attractive cell type for this purpose is the adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell (AD-MSC), which is abundant and easily harvested from liposuction procedures. Even this cell type has its drawbacks, however, including the required culture period for expansion, which could pose risks of cellular transformation or contamination. Eliminating culture entirely would be ideal to avoid these concerns. In this study, we used the raw population of cells obtained after digestion of human lipo…

Arterial Embolism to the Upper Extremity in a Patient with Factor V Leiden Mutation (APC Resistance)
2003
Factor V Leiden mutation has emerged as one of the leading abnormalities in inherited blood coagulation disorders, resulting in a markedly increased risk for deep leg vein thrombosis. A 24- year-old woman presented with acute onset of critical ischemia of her left thumb and index finger. Intraarterial angiography revealed an embolus in the distal radial artery and a thrombotic occlusion of the digital artery of the thumb and index finger. Immediate therapy encompassed a selective surgical embolectomy of the distal radial artery followed by a local intraarterial lysis that was continued for 3 days. Additionally, therapeutic anticoagulation and vasodilating drugs (prostaglandin E) were admin…
Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in Italy: Clinical and molecular features
2020
Abstract Background and aims Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by extremely elevated plasma levels of low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high risk of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). HoFH is caused by pathogenic variants in several genes, such as LDLR, APOB and PCSK9, responsible for autosomal dominant hypercholesterolemia (ADH), and LDLRAP1 responsible for autosomal recessive hypercholesterolemia (ARH). Aim of this study was the review of the clinical and molecular features of patients with HoFH identified in Italy from 1989 to 2019. Methods Data were collected from lipid clinics and laboratories, …
Intervenciones individuales para mejorar la adherencia al tratamiento farmacéutico, la dieta y la actividad física en adultos con hipertensión primar…
2020
Introduction Hypertension is a chronic disease with 31% worldwide prevalence in adults. It has been associated with non-adherence to therapeutic regime with a negative impact on the prognosis of the disease and healthcare-associated costs. So, it is necessary to identify effective interventions to improve adherence among the afflicted population. The objective of this protocol is to describe the methods for a systematic review that will evaluate the effect of individual interventions so as to improve adherence to the prescribed pharmacological treatment, as well as to prescribed diet and physical activity in adults with primary hypertension. Methods and analysis A systematic search of studi…

PET Studies of Net Blood—Brain Clearance of FDOPA to Human Brain: Age-Dependent Decline of [18F]Fluorodopamine Storage Capacity
2005
Conventional methods for the graphical analysis of 6-[18F]fluorodopa (FDOPA)/positron emission tomography (PET) recordings ( Kappin) may be prone to negative bias because of oversubtraction of the precursor pool in the region of interest, and because of diffusion of decarboxylated FDOPA metabolites from the brain. These effects may reduce the sensitivity of FDOPA/PET for the detection of age-related changes in dopamine innervations. To test for these biasing effects, we have used a constrained compartmental analysis to calculate the brain concentrations of the plasma metabolite 3- O-methyl-FDOPA (OMFD) during 120 mins of FDOPA circulation in healthy young, healthy elderly, and Parkinson's …
Cohort profile: the ESC EURObservational Research Programme Non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infraction (NSTEMI) Registry
2023
The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) EURObservational Research Programme (EORP) Non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) Registry aims to identify international patterns in NSTEMI management in clinical practice and outcomes against the 2015 ESC Guidelines for the management of acute coronary syndromes in patients presenting without ST-segment-elevation. Consecutively hospitalised adult NSTEMI patients (n = 3620) were enrolled between 11 March 2019 and 6 March 2021, and individual patient data prospectively collected at 287 centres in 59 participating countries during a two-week enrolment period per centre. The registry collected data relating to baseline characteristics,…
Normal values of M mode echocardiographic measurements of more than 2000 healthy infants and children in central Europe
2000
OBJECTIVE—To obtain normal M mode (one dimensional) echocardiographic values in a substantial sample of normal infants and children. DESIGN—Data were obtained over three years from a single centre in central Europe. PATIENTS—2036 healthy infants and children aged one day to 18 years. METHODS—In line with recommendations for standardising measurements from M mode echocardiograms, and using digital echocardiographic equipment, measurements were obtained of the following: right ventricular anterior wall thickness at end diastole, right ventricular end diastolic dimension, thickness of interventricular septum at end diastole and end systole, thickness of posterior wall of the left ventricle at …
Nonlinear coupling is absent in acute myocardial patients but not healthy subjects.
2008
We investigated whether autonomic nervous system imbalance imposed by pharmacological blockades and associated with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is manifested as modifications of the nonlinear interactions in heart rate variability signal using a statistically based bispectrum method. The statistically based bispectrum method is an ideal approach for identifying nonlinear couplings in a system and overcomes the previous limitation of determining in an ad hoc way the presence of such interactions. Using the improved bispectrum method, we found significant nonlinear interactions in healthy young subjects, which were abolished by the administration of atropine but were still present afte…
