Protective Effects of L- and D-Carnosine on R-Crystallin Amyloid Fibril Formation: Implications for Cataract Disease

2009

Mildly denaturing conditions induce bovine ?-crystallin, the major structural lens protein, to self-assemble into fibrillar structures in vitro. The natural dipeptide L-carnosine has been shown to have potential protective and therapeutic significance in many diseases. Carnosine derivatives have been proposed as potent agents for ophthalmic therapies of senile cataracts and diabetic ocular complications. Here we report the inhibitory effect induced by the peptide (L- and D-enantiomeric form) on ?-crystallin fibrillation and the almost complete restoration of the chaperone activity lost after denaturant and/or heat stress. Scanning force microscopy (SFM), thioflavin T, and a turbidimetry ass…

TRANSFORMING THEOLOGICAL SYMBOLS

2010

. In this essay I explore the need for transforming the Christian theological symbols of the Trinity, Incarnation, and Redemption, which arose in the context of neo-Platonic metaphysics, in light of late modern, especially Peircean, metaphysics and categories. I engage and attempt to complement the proposal by Andrew Robinson and Christopher Southgate (in this issue of Zygon) with insights from the Peircean-inspired philosophical theology of Robert Neville. I argue that their proposal can be strengthened by acknowledging the way in which theological symbols themselves have a transformative (pragmatic) effect as they are “taken” in context and “break” on the Infinite.

Tea Rooms. Mujeres obreras: Una novela de avanzada de Luisa Carnés

2019

Tea Rooms.

Identification of Carnobacterium, Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc and Pediococcus by rDNA-based techniques

2003

Summary Ribosomal DNA-based techniques including the analysis of profiles generated by ISR amplification, ISR restriction and ARDRA have been evaluated as molecular tools for identifying Carnobacterium, Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc and Pediococcus. They have been applied for the molecular characterization of 91 strains with the following identities: eight Carnobacterium including the eight type species of the genus; 61 Lactobacillus including 40 type strains out of 45 species, 13 Leuconostoc, out of them 11 are type strains and three are subspecies of Lc. mesenteroides; and nine strains representing the six species of genus Pediococcus. The genetic relationship displayed between these species…

Simultaneous detection of Carnobacterium and Leuconostoc in meat products by multiplex PCR.

2004

M.C. MACIAN, E. CHENOLL AND R. AZNAR. 2004. Aims: To develop a multiplex PCR approach for simultaneous detection of Leuconostoc and Carnobacterium and its validation in meat products. Methods and Results: Two multiplex PCR assays were developed using newly designed 16S rDNA-directed primers adapted to the current taxonomic situation of genera Leuconostoc and Carnobacterium that allow: (i) simultaneous detection of both genera, and members of the nonmotile species of genus Carnobacterium and (ii) identification in a single assay of the nonmotile species C. divergens, C. maltaromicum and C. gallinarum. Sensitivity values of 10 3 and 10 4 CFU g )1 were determined for multiplex PCR detection of…

Lactic acid bacteria associated with vacuum-packed cooked meat product spoilage: population analysis by rDNA-based methods.

2007

Aim:  To determine the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) implicated in bloating spoilage of vacuum-packed and refrigerated meat products. Methods and Results:  A total of 18 samples corresponding to four types of meat products, with and without spoilage symptoms, were studied. In all, 387 colonies growing on de Man, Rogosa and Sharpe, yeast glucose lactose peptone and trypticase soy yeast extract plates were identified by internal spacer region (ISR), ISR-restriction fragment length polymorphism and rapid amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis profiles as Lactobacillus (37%), Leuconostoc (43%), Carnobacterium (11%), Enterococcus (4%) and Lactococcus (2%). Leuconostoc mesenteroides dominated …

Zwei wiederentdeckte Briefe Niebuhrs und ein anonymer Aufsatz in der 'Allgemeinen Literatur-Zeitung'

2012

In the archives of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften two letters by Barthold Georg Niebuhr of September 1816 are preserved which have never been published in a scholarly edition. The present transcription of the text is diplomatical. Furthermore the letters are examinated in their historical context. The use made of these letters in an anonymous publication in the same year in the Allegmeine Literatur-Zeitung is also discussed.

Radon–Nikodym Property and Area Formula for Banach Homogeneous Group Targets

2013

We prove a Rademacher-type theorem for Lipschitz mappings from a subset of a Carnot group to a Banach homogeneous group, equipped with a suitably weakened Radon-Nikodym property. We provide a metric area formula that applies to these mappings and more generally to all almost everywhere metrically differentiable Lipschitz mappings defined on a Carnot group. peerReviewed

Hypolipidaemic effects of fenofibrate are not altered by mildronate-mediated normalization of carnitine concentration in rat liver.

1999

The five-fold higher carnitine content in the liver of fenofibrate-treated rats addresses the question about the possible role of this enhancement in the hypolipidaemic effect of the drug and the underlying mechanisms. When fenofibrate was administered with mildronate (a gamma-butyrobetaine hydroxylase inhibitor) in suitable amount, the content in carnitine was found to be normalized in liver. However, triglyceride contents of liver and serum were then at least as low as in rats treated by fenofibrate only. When carnitine concentration was lowered by mildronate to the third of the normal value, a marked increase in triglycerides occurred both in liver and serum, while the five-fold increase…
