On the activity of trifluoperazine and palmitoylcarnitine in mice: Delayed hypersensitivity models

2001

Abstract The effect of pre- and post-challenge treatments with trifluoperazine and palmitoylcarnitine, two protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors characterised by their interaction with the phospholipid enzyme cofactor, on the inflammation caused by delayed hypersensitivity (DTH) to dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) and sheep red blood cells (SRBC) in mice is reported. The activity of dexamethasone and two immunosupressors, azathioprine and methotrexate, is also evaluated. The effectiveness of pre-treatment with each of the test drugs diminished when the DNFB challenge dose increased, whereas trifluoperazine and azathioprine were more active when administered after the challenge at the high DNFB dose.…

Solubility of solid carnosic acid in supercritical CO2 with ethanol as a co-solvent

2005

Abstract The present study is devoted to the experimental measurement and thermodynamic modeling of solid carnosic acid solubility in supercritical CO 2  + ethanol as a co-solvent. Measurements were carried out at temperatures in the range of 313.15 and 333.15 K, pressures ranging from 280 to 400 bar, and at different content of the modifier ethanol (from 0.7 to 10%). The Group Contribution Associating Equation of State (GCA-EoS) [H.P. Gros, S.B. Bottini, E.A. Brignole, High pressure phase equilibrium modeling of mixtures containing associating compounds and gases, Fluid Phase Equilibria 139 (1997) 75–87] was applied in this work to represent the experimental solubility data obtained. Kretzoiarctos gen. nov., the oldest member of the giant panda clade

2012

The phylogenetic position of the giant panda, Ailuropoda melanoleuca (Carnivora: Ursidae: Ailuropodinae), has been one of the most hotly debated topics by mammalian biologists and paleontologists during the last century. Based on molecular data, it is currently recognized as a true ursid, sister-taxon of the remaining extant bears, from which it would have diverged by the Early Miocene. However, from a paleobiogeographic and chronological perspective, the origin of the giant panda lineage has remained elusive due to the scarcity of the available Miocene fossil record. Until recently, the genus Ailurarctos from the Late Miocene of China (ca. 8–7 mya) was recognized as the oldest undoubted me…

Response of an arctic predator guild to collapsing lemming cycles

2012

6 pages; International audience; Alpine and arctic lemming populations appear to be highly sensitive to climate change, and when faced with warmer and shorter winters, their well-known high-amplitude population cycles may collapse. Being keystone species in tundra ecosystems, changed lemming dynamics may convey significant knock-on effects on trophically linked species. Here, we analyse long-term (1988-2010), community-wide monitoring data from two sites in high-arctic Greenland and document how a collapse in collared lemming cyclicity affects the population dynamics of the predator guild. Dramatic changes were observed in two highly specialized lemming predators: snowy owl and stoat. Follo…

Rapid development of Epstein-Barr virus-associated Hodgkin's disease after cessation of foscarnet therapy in an HIV-infected patient.

2000

Epidemiological features suggest a link between Hodgkin's disease (HD) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection1. Indeed, EBV genome and expression of latent antigens can be found in Reed-Sternberg cells. In the majority of cases HD in HIV patients seems to be EBV-associated. We report on a 51-year-old HIV-infected patient in whom EBV-positive HD of mixed cellularity rapidly developed within one month after cessation of treatment with intravenous foscarnet.
