Environment and subsistence strategies at La Viña rock shelter and Llonin cave (Asturias, Spain) during MIS3

2020

The sites of La Viña and Llonin have an important archaeological sequence corresponding to Marine Isotope Stage 3: Mousterian, Aurignacian and Gravettian periods. La Viña is a complex rock shelter with continuous occupations, being some (basically the Mousterian and the Aurignacian in contact levels) altered by post-depositional processes as a consequence of the irregular bedrock morphology and the type of processes involved. The cave of Llonin mainly consists of occasional human/carnivores occupations during the Mousterian and the Gravettian. The current multidisciplinary research has allowed us to obtain and match several preliminary data: site formation processes, fauna and stable isotop…

RNA-binding properties and membrane insertion of Melon necrotic spot virus (MNSV) double gene block movement proteins

2006

AbstractAdvances in structural and biochemical properties of carmovirus movement proteins (MPs) have only been obtained in p7 and p9 from Carnation mottle virus (CarMV). Alignment of carmovirus MPs revealed a low conservation of amino acid identity but interestingly, similarity was elevated in regions associated with the functional secondary structure elements reported for CarMV which were conserved in all studied proteins. Nevertheless, some differential features in relation with CarMV MPs were identified in those from Melon necrotic virus (MNSV) (p7A and p7B). p7A was a soluble non-sequence specific RNA-binding protein, but unlike CarMV p7, its central region alone could not account for t…

l-Carnitine l-tartrate supplementation favorably affects biochemical markers of recovery from physical exertion in middle-aged men and women.

2009

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Carnipure tartrate (Lonza, Allendale, NJ) supplementation (total dose of 2 g/d of l-carnitine) on markers of performance and recovery from physical exertion in middle-aged men and women. Normally active and healthy men (n = 9, 45.4 +/- 5.3 years old) and women (n = 9, 51.9 +/- 5.0 years old) volunteered to participate in the investigation. Double-blind, placebo, balanced treatment presentation and crossover design were used with 3 weeks and 3 days of supplementation followed by a 1-week washout period before the other counterbalanced treatment was initiated. After 3 weeks of each supplementation protocol, each participant then performe…

Deceptive pollination of Dactylorhiza incarnata: an experimental test of the magnet species hypothesis

1994

Floral deception, which mainly appears in highly evolved families such as Orchidaceae, was studied in Central Finland. In nectarless Dactylorhiza incarnata, the deceptive pollination system has been considered to function best in remote habitats such as marshes, where flowering plants attractive to pollinators are rare (remote habitats hypothesis). In contrast, the magnet-species theory predicts that a nectarless plant benefits from growing in the vicinity of nectarcontaining species. We tested these hypotheses by adding attractive, nectar-containg violets (Viola x wittrockiana) to orchid populations. The percentage of fruit set in D. incarnata was adversely affected by the violets, probabl…

Nutrient versus pollination limitation in Platanthera bifolia and Dactylorhiza incarnata (Orchidaceae)

2000

Availability of resources and pollination services have been demonstrated to have impact on reproductive success in some orchid species, but to our knowledge no studies have examined the effects of nutrient application and pollination limitation in the same experiment. In this study, factors limiting reproductive success were studied with two terrestrial orchid species in Central Finland during 1996 and 1997. In a field experiment using a factorial design, plants of nectar-producing Platanthera bifolia and nectarless Dactylorhiza incarnata were treated with nutrient application and hand-pollination. Inflorescence size was considered as an indicator of attractiveness to pollinators as well a…

OCTN2-Mediated Carnitine Uptake in a Newly Discovered Human Proximal Tubule Cell Line (Caki-1)

2006

The proximal tubular reabsorption of carnitine in the human kidney is significant because more than 95% of the carnitine filtered in the kidney is reabsorbed by the proximal tubules therefore maintaining the homeostatic balance of carnitine in the body. Objectives of this study include the characterization of OCTN2 function in the Caki-1 cell line and the potential interactions of carnitine uptake with renally secreted drugs, including drugs of quaternary ammonium structure. Caki-1 cells were additionally characterized to be of proximal tubule nature, and an apical membrane expression pattern of OCTN2 in Caki-1 cells was discovered. Uptake studies with radiolabeled L-carnitine in Caki-1 cel…
