Beneficial effects of l-carnitine in myoblastic C2C12 cells

2003

L-Carnitine is a key molecule in the transfer of fatty acid across mitochondrial membranes. Bioavailable L-carnitine is either provided by an endogeneous biosynthesis or after intestinal absorption of dietary items containing L-carnitine. After intestinal absorption or hepatic biosynthesis, L-carnitine is transferred to organs whose metabolism is dependent upon fatty acid oxidation, such as skeletal muscle. To cross the muscle plasma membrane, there are several transporters involved. Among those transporters, OCTN2 is actually the only one to have been clearly characterized. Zidovudine is a commonly used inhibitor of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication. Zidovudine has many side e…

Carnauba wax microspheres loaded with valproic acid: Preparation and evaluation of drug release

1995

AbstractTo minimize unwanted toxic effects of valproic acid (1) by the kinetic control of drug release, gastroresistant carnauba wax microspheres loaded with the antiepileptic agent were prepared. The preparation was based on a technique involving melting and dispersion of drug-containing wax in an aqueous medium. The resulting emulsion after cooling under rapid stirring produced solid, discrete, reproducible free flowing microspheres which converted the liquid drug droplets into solid material. About 94% of the isolated microspheres were of particle size range 200-425 μm. The microspheres were analyzed to determine the drug content in various particle size range and to characterize the in …

Effects of γ-Butyrobetaine and Mildronate on Nitric Oxide Production in Lipopolysaccharide-Treated Rats

2008

Production of nitric oxide was measured in lipopolysaccharide-treated rats (10 mg/kg, 4 hr) using the electron paramagnetic resonance method. As compared to the control animals, the nitric oxide level in liver of lipopolysaccharide-treated rats increased from 27.6+/-4.7 to 1485+/-129 ng/g tissue, in heart from 4.8+/-0.7 to 271+/-26 ng/g tissue, in blood from 33.6+/-12.4 to 638+/-136 ng/g tissue, in kidney from 3.3+/-0.5 to 356+/-31 ng/g tissue, in brain cortex from 46.0+/-3.4 to 227+/-27 ng/g tissue, in cerebellum from 27.7+/-2.6 to 218+/-30 ng/g tissue, and in testes from 13.8+/-1.1 to 86+/-8 ng/g tissue. Administration of the antiischaemic drug, mildronate (120 mg/kg) caused a significant…

In vivo release of non-neuronal acetylcholine from the human skin as measured by dermal microdialysis: effect of botulinum toxin

2006

1.--Acetylcholine is synthesized in the majority of non-neuronal cells, for example in human skin. In the present experiments, the in vivo release of acetylcholine was measured by dermal microdialysis. 2.--Two microdialysis membranes were inserted intradermally at the medial shank of volunteers. Physiological saline containing 1 muM neostigmine was perfused at a constant rate of 4 microl min(-1) and the effluent was collected in six subsequent 20 min periods. Acetylcholine was measured by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) combined with bioreactors and electrochemical detection. 3.--Analysis of the effluent by HPLC showed an acetylcholine peak that disappeared, when the analytical c…

On Formalizing Logical Modalities

2021

This paper is in the scope of the philosophy of modal logic; more precisely, it concerns the semantics of modal logic, when the modal elements are interpreted as logical modalities. Most authors have thought that the logic for logical modality—that is, the one to be used to formalize the notion of logical truth (and other related notions)—is to be found among logical systems in which modalities are allowed to be iterated. This has raised the problem of the adequacy, to that formalization purpose, of some modal schemes, such as S4 and S5 . It has been argued that the acceptance of S5 leads to non-normal modal systems, in which the uniform substitution rule fails. The thesis supported in this…

Analytical Expressions for Radiative Losses in Solar Cells

2019

Analytical expressions for the fundamental losses in single junction solar cells are revised and improved. The losses are, as far as possible, described using parameters with clear physical interpretations. One important improvement compared to earlier work is the use of Lambert’s W function, which allows for analytical expressions for the voltage and current at the maximum power point. Other improvements include the use of Stefan Boltzmann’s law to describe the incoming energy flux as well as taking into account the fermionic nature of the electrons when calculating the thermalization loss. A new expression, which combines emission, Boltzmann and Carnot losses, is presented. Finally, an ex…

Sharp capacity estimates for annuli in weighted $$\mathbf {R}^n$$ R n and in metric spaces

2016

We obtain estimates for the nonlinear variational capacity of annuli in weighted $$\mathbf {R}^n$$ and in metric spaces. We introduce four different (pointwise) exponent sets, show that they all play fundamental roles for capacity estimates, and also demonstrate that whether an end point of an exponent set is attained or not is important. As a consequence of our estimates we obtain, for instance, criteria for points to have zero (resp. positive) capacity. Our discussion holds in rather general metric spaces, including Carnot groups and many manifolds, but it is just as relevant on weighted $$\mathbf {R}^n$$ . Indeed, to illustrate the sharpness of our estimates, we give several examples of …

Fine properties of functions with bounded variation in Carnot-Carathéodory spaces

2019

Abstract We study properties of functions with bounded variation in Carnot-Caratheodory spaces. We prove their almost everywhere approximate differentiability and we examine their approximate discontinuity set and the decomposition of their distributional derivatives. Under an additional assumption on the space, called property R , we show that almost all approximate discontinuities are of jump type and we study a representation formula for the jump part of the derivative.
