TRANSFORMING THEOLOGICAL SYMBOLS

. In this essay I explore the need for transforming the Christian theological symbols of the Trinity, Incarnation, and Redemption, which arose in the context of neo-Platonic metaphysics, in light of late modern, especially Peircean, metaphysics and categories. I engage and attempt to complement the proposal by Andrew Robinson and Christopher Southgate (in this issue of Zygon) with insights from the Peircean-inspired philosophical theology of Robert Neville. I argue that their proposal can be strengthened by acknowledging the way in which theological symbols themselves have a transformative (pragmatic) effect as they are “taken” in context and “break” on the Infinite.
Genetic Diversity of Pathogenic and Nonpathogenic Populations of Fusarium oxysporum Isolated from Carnation Fields in Argentina.

In order to elucidate the origin of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi in Argentina, the genetic diversity among pathogenic isolates together with co-occurring nonpathogenic isolates on carnation was investigated. In all, 151 isolates of F. oxysporum were obtained from soils and carnation plants from several horticultural farms in Argentina. The isolates were characterized using vegetative compatibility group (VCG), intergenic spacer (IGS) typing, and pathogenicity tests on carnation. Seven reference strains of F. oxysporum f. sp. dianthi also were analyzed and assigned to six different IGS types and six VCGs. Isolation frequency and efficiency of mycoparasitic Pythium species in the West Mediterranean region of Turkey

Abstract A total of 132 mycoparasitic Pythium isolates were obtained from the soil samples taken from fruit orchards, vegetable fields, carnation greenhouses, sugarbeet fields and cereal fields in the West Mediterranean region of Turkey. The Oomycetes were isolated by using; surface soil dilution plate, sclerotia bait and precolonised plate methods. Isolates were identified as P. acanthophoron, P. amasculinum, P. lycopersicum, P. oligandrum, P. periplocum and P. paroecandrum, according to their morphological and molecular characteristics. Transient structural ordering of the RNA-binding domain of carnation mottle virus p7 movement protein modulates nucleic acid binding.

Plant viral movement proteins bind to RNA and participate in the intra- and intercellular movement of the RNAs from plant viruses. However, the role and magnitude of the conformational changes associated with the formation of RNA-protein complexes are not yet defined. Here we describe studies on the relevance of a preexisting nascent alpha-helix at the C terminus of the RNA-binding domain of p7, a movement protein from carnation mottle virus, to RNA binding. Synthetic peptide analogues and single amino acid mutation at the RNA-binding domain of recombinant p7 protein were used to correlate the transient structural order in aqueous solution with RNA-binding potential.

AbstractAdvances in structural and biochemical properties of carmovirus movement proteins (MPs) have only been obtained in p7 and p9 from Carnation mottle virus (CarMV). Alignment of carmovirus MPs revealed a low conservation of amino acid identity but interestingly, similarity was elevated in regions associated with the functional secondary structure elements reported for CarMV which were conserved in all studied proteins. Volatile constituents of Dianthus rupicola Biv. from Sicily: activity against microorganisms affecting cellulosic objects.

Dianthus rupicola Biv. (cliffs carnation) is a camephytic, suffruticous, perennial plant growing up to 40 cm high. The plant is widespread in Sicily and neighbouring islands (Egadi, Lampedusa, Lipari) and in some areas of southern Italy. GC and GC-MS analyses of the essential oil distilled from the flowers showed the presence of 66 components. Its composition is characterised by the high content of thymol and carvacrol derivatives. A good antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus and Bacillussubtilis, both infesting cellulosic historical material, was shown, whereas the antioxidant capacity was determined to be quite poor.
