Positivism on the move: translators and publishers in Mexico and Argentina (1850-1950)
2013
2016
ABSTRACT: Beugelen was a game, described early on by Erasmus, which gained wide popularity in the Netherlands, played both in palaces and villages, as evidenced by numerous engravings of the 16th and 17th Centuries. Therefore, it is not surprising to find its allegorical-symbolic exploitation, associated with concepts such as mental laziness (Heinrich Aldegrever), the fatal consequences of the game (Johannes David) and the effects of human and divine love (Peter Rollos, Typus mundi , Ludovicus van Leuven and Willem den Elger). In the light of previous emblematic repertories, I delve into the meaning of a number of paintings, paying special attencion to works of Lucas Gassel ( David and Bath…
2014
ABSTRACT: This article seeks to compare emblematics with El dia de fiesta (1654/1660) by Juan de Zabaleta, a collection of portraits of manners and characters marked by an encyclopaedic feature that serves the pronounced degree of religious and moral didacticism of the text. It first recapitulates the epistemological basis that Zabaleta has in common with emblematics, namely analogical thinking (Foucault) and the belief in the ‘readability of the world’ (Blumenberg). Subsequently it analyses the allegorical function of certain animals –the panther and the octopus, the ape and the turtle– which Zabaleta refers to as examples of virtues and vices, especially hypocrisy, comparing it to the mea…
2015
ABSTRACT: In this study I analyze a group of books structured around a variant of the classical emblem based upon an illustrious personage, in which a portrait serves as the pictura and the name constitutes the motto. My purpose is to introduce what I consider to be a subgenre of emblematic literature and highlight some of its major works. I hope to spur interest in the further study of this subgenre, and thus move towards a more suitable conceptualization of the emblem for the purpose of its scientific analysis.
This paper focuses on the relationship between gender and translation in the Galician literary system given a corpus of translations of literary texts written by women and publi…
2016
ABSTRACT: The first Marquis of Palmerola, Francesc Xavier Despujol, remodelled his family residence in 1784, which included a large hall decorated with a pictorial program painted by Pere Pau Montana. These historical paintings depicted episodes of war and peace, related to the family history of the owners, in order to show the importance and roots of their lineage, highlighting their illustrious role in their country’s history and commerce. This constitutes an outright justification of their power, an ostentatious display of their social status and their loyalty to the crown, following the trend amongst the nobility for building these cases grans during the last third of the eighteenth cen…
Emblemática santa en sepulcros barrocos
2016
ABSTRACT: «Sacred Emblematics on Baroque Sepulchres» is a study of urns and reliquaries for Catalan saints. The symbolic language is applied to the funeral container of sacred content, in the specific cases of St. Olegario, St. Armengol, St. Bernard Calbo and St. Mary of Cervello. With them we can refer to three different ways of presenting the sacred iconography in relation to local saints with incorrupt bodies: by means of emblematic literature, hagiography or decorative or heraldic motifs. KEYWORDS: Sepulchre, Reliquary, Incorrupt Saints, Catalonia, Baroque, Iconography.
2016
ABSTRACT: This article introduces the emblem book Cor Iesv amanti sacrvm by Antonius Wierix, written around 1586/87 with 18 engravings accompanied by brief Latin poems of two stanzas with three lines each. After a general introduction to the work, this study presents an iconographic analysis of the picturae , interpreted together with their corresponding subscriptiones . This text and image composition is then regarded as religious language, typical of Jesuit emblem books. By comparing different editions of this book, the order of the 18 emblems - suggested (but not explained) by Menon - is confirmed, and a new sequence is proposed, highlighting the main objective of this work, viz. the pro…
2016
ABSTRACT: In 1535 Emperor Charles V made a triumphant journey to the north of Sicily after the victory of Tunisia. The triumphal entries made in the Sicilian cities featured ceremonial elements which would later be imitated by the other Italian cities that received the Emperor. The Roman-style triumph and the chivalric romances are the main models used in the ephemeral decorations, which would have important consequences in European art of the period. KEYWORDS: Charles V, Sicily, Tunisia, Triumphal Entries, Renaissance, Santa Cruz.
