Effect of Supplementation with Wheat Bran Aqueous Extracts Obtained by Ultrasound-Assisted Technologies on the Sensory Properties and the Antioxidant…

2015

Phenolic compounds have antioxidant properties and activate endogenous detoxification defense systems able to scavenge the reactive species of oxygen. The external layers of wheat caryopsis, largely constituting by-products of the milling industry such as bran and various middlings, contain relevant amounts of phenolic compounds. The aim of the research has been to evaluate the effect of supplementation with wheat bran aqueous extracts, obtained by ultrasound-assisted technologies, on the sensory properties and antioxidant activity of dry pasta. The HPLC-DAD characterization of the extract evidenced the presence of ferulic and p-coumaric acids. The supplemented pasta showed significantly h…

Glutamine synthetase isozymes in germinating barley seeds

1993

Glutamine synthetase (GS; EC 6.3.1.2) is a key enzyme of ammonia assimilation in higher plants. In the present study the subunit composition and localization of GS in germinating barley (Hordeum vulgare) seed have been clarified. Analysis of the GS polypeptide composition by immunoblotting revealed two different polypeptides. A and B, with a molecular mass of 42 and 40 kDa, respectively. In the scutellum subunit A was already present in the ungerminated seed and remained unchanged, whereas subunit B appeared on day 2 and increased about 5-fold during germination. Polypeptide B also appeared later during germination in the aleurone layer, roots and weakly in the etiolated shoots. By immunogo…

Uptake of triticonazole, during imbibition, by wheat caryopses after seed treatment

1997

The uptake of 14C-labelled triticonazole by wheat caryopses during imbibition was investigated. The uptake from an aqueous solution appeared to be driven by mass flow rather than by accumulation in seed lipids. During treatment with a liquid seed-dressing preparation of triticonazole, c. 1 μg triticonazole per caryopsis (2·4% of applied triticonazole) entered the seed. During germination in soil, another c. 1 μg triticonazole per caryopsis entered the seed in 24 h. In killed seeds, no penetration was observed between 24 h and 72 h after the beginning of imbibition. After seed treatment and imbibition in soil, triticonazole appeared to be located in the seed coats and embryo, but not in endo…

Acid Carboxypeptidases in Grains and Leaves of Wheat, Triticum aestivum L

1986

Extracts of resting and germinating (3 days at 20 degrees C) wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv Ruso) grains rapidly hydrolyzed various benzyloxycarbonyldipeptides (Z-dipeptides) at pH 4 to 6. Similar activities were present in extracts of mature flag leaves. Fractionation by chromatography on CM-cellulose and on Sephadex G-200 showed that the activities in germinating grains were due to five acid carboxypeptidases with different and complementary substrate specificities. The wheat enzymes appeared to correspond to the five acid carboxypeptidases present in germinating barley (L Mikola 1983 Biochim Biophys Acta 747: 241-252). The enzymes were designated wheat carboxypeptidases I to V and their …
