Ferro-pedrizite, NaLi2(Fe2+ 2Al2Li)Si8O22(OH)2, a new amphibole-supergroup mineral from the Sutlug pegmatite, Tyva Republic, Russia

2015

Ferro-pedrizite, a new amphibole-supergroup mineral was discovered in the Sutlug pegmatite occurrence situated in the Targi River Basin, Tyva Republic, Eastern Sibera, Russia. The associated minerals are quartz, albite, microcline, spodumene, cassiterite, beryl, columbite-(Mn), fergusonite-β-(Y), fluorapatite, schorl, trilithionite and fluorite. Ferro-pedrizite forms dark grey-blue to violet-blue acicular and long prismatic crystals up to 2 × 5 × 50 mm and their aggregates. D meas = 3.16(1) g/cm3 (by hydrostatic weighing), 3.13(1) g/cm3 (by flotation in heavy liquids); D calc = 3.135 g/cm3. Ferro-pedrizite is optically biaxial (−), α = 1.614(3), β = 1.638(3), γ = 1.653(3), 2 V meas = 75(5)°…

Electrochemical Detection of High Oxidation States of Chromium( IV and V ) in Chromium‐Doped Cassiterite and Tin‐Sphene Ceramic Pigmenting Systems

2006

Solid-state electrochemistry is applied to detect the presence of chromium centres with high oxidation states in chromium-doped cassiterite and tin-sphene ceramic pigmenting systems. Voltammetric data indicate that CrV and CrIV centres with different coordinative arrangements exist in the studied materials, and yield proton-assisted reduction processes at +0.95, +0.42 AgCl/Ag in contact with 0.50 M H2SO4. Electrochemical measurements are correlated with spectroscopic data. The CrIV and CrV metal ions display a significant light-driven electrocatalytic effect on the oxidation of 1,4-dihydrobenzoquinone and Fe(CN)64– ions that involves the formation of surface-confined adducts. Low-pressure ferroelastic phase transition in rutile-type AX2 minerals: cassiterite (SnO2), pyrolusite (MnO2) and sellaite (MgF2)

2019

The structural behaviour of cassiterite (SnO2), pyrolusite (MnO2) and sellaite (MgF2), i.e. AX2-minerals, has been investigated at room temperature by in situ high-pressure single-crystal diffraction, up to 14 GPa, using a diamond anvil cell. Such minerals undergo a ferroelastic phase transition, from rutile-like structure (SG: P42/mnm) to CaCl2-like structure (SG: Pnnm), at ≈ 10.25, 4.05 and 4.80 GPa, respectively. The structural evolution under pressure has been described by the trends of some structure parameters that are other than zero in the region of the low-symmetry phase’s stability. In particular, three tilting-angles (ω, ω′, ABS) and the metric distortion of the cation-centred oc…

Electrochemical Characterization of Archaeological Tin-Opacified Lead-Alkali Glazes and Their Corrosion Processes

2005

The electrochemical response of weathered and unweathered archaeological tin-opacified glazes attached to paraffin-impregnated graphite electrodes is described. Upon comparison with the square wave voltammetric response of SnO2, PbO and PbO2, Sn- and Pb-centered reduction processes can be characterized. Reduction of Sn(IV) involves the stepwise formation of solid Sn(II) and Sn metal, successively, at potentials of −0.08 and −0.55 V vs. AgCl/Ag. Reduction of network-modifier Pb(II) in glazes occurs at −0.5 V and is accompanied by the reduction of network-forming Pb(IV) at potentials ranging from +0.65 to +0.20 V, confirming the presence of such centers in glazes. Voltammetric data suggest th…

Enzymatic Synthesis and Surface Deposition of Tin Dioxide using Silicatein-α

2011

Nanostructured tin dioxide was synthesized by making use of the catalytic activity of silicatein-α. TEM, HRTEM, and XRD revealed the formation of cassiterite SnO2. Surface bound silicatein retains its biocatalytic activity. This was demonstrated by immobilizing silicatein on glass surfaces using a histidine-tag chelating anchor. The subsequent deposition of SnO2 on glass was monitored by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This new aspect of silicatein activity toward the formation of metal oxides other than SiO2, TiO2, and BaTiO3 opens up new vistas in composite material synthesis.
