Reducing the gap between leaders and voters? Elite polarization, outbidding competition, and the rise of secessionism in Catalonia
2016
ABSTRACTThe ethnic outbidding thesis explains party polarization as a consequence of political changes amongst voters. We argued instead that party elites’ extreme position on the national identity cleavage can help polarizing strategies to prevail over moderate strategies in a context of increasing political uncertainty, without previous voters’ polarization. We test successfully this hypothesis in Catalonia by analysing the polarization of political parties and people’s demands for self-government in Catalonia since the early 2000s. We also find that the result of this outbidding pattern of competition was a reduction in the gap between elites’ and voters’ views on national identity. The …
Festive literature in Catalan as a space of cultural resistance: The Valencian magazine Pensat i Fet (1912‐72) during the Spanish post-war period
2021
The magazine Pensat i Fet (1912‐72), which was published every year before the Fallas festival and included a wide range of texts and pictures related to it, had been an important element in the dissemination of literature and culture in Catalan and the agenda of valencianism among wide sectors of Valencian society. Until 1936 ‐ especially during the years of the Second Spanish Republic ‐ the magazine explicitly opted for valencianism, for example, advocating for the agreement that would make the statute of autonomy possible. However, from 1940 onwards it became a true bastion of cultural resistance. So, the magazine maintained a literary use of Catalan language in diverse registers, strong…
Use and Translation of Demonstratives in Fiction: A Contrastive Approach (English-Catalan)
2013
Demonstratives are usually described as prototypical situational space deictics, but corpus analysis shows that situational deixis is not the most frequent function that they perform. This article shows the complexity of the use of demonstratives and the effects of such complexity on translation by analyzing some English examples and their translation into Catalan in two novels. Specifically, the English demonstratives this/these/that/those and their Catalan counterparts have been identified as a first step of the analysis. Secondly, their use has been analyzed taking into account the differences of the two deictic systems and other relevant variables. Finally, the general strategies activa…
De La Biografia Històrica a la Novel·la Cavalleresca: El Paper Dels Cavallers Francesos Al Victorial i Al Curial e Güelfa
2010
Between 1400 and 1412 (forty years before the writing of Curial e Guelfa), a reduced number of French and Catalan soldiers and knights —Boucicaut, Guillaume du Chastel and Pere Cervello— were involved in a series of chivalric warfare and military actions, which must have been the inspiration for the composition of some Catalan (Curial e Guelfa) and French fictions (Le petit Jehan of Saintre by Antoine de La Sale). Taking into account the references to these characters, places, and actions included in El Victorial —Count Pero Nino's Castilian biography—, this article tries to analyze the impact of the fame of these European knights, whose outstanding feats were widely celebrated by history, …
An Almost Unknown Literature: Catalan Language Writers in Valencia's Kingdom in the Early Modern Age (1500-1800)
2009
This essay provides an overview of literary production in Catalan in the Kingdom of Valencia during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, an extensive period of time that has been described as "decadent" on account of the pressure of Castilian and the relative neglect by Valencians of their own language in favor of that of the Hispanic monarchy. However, recent research has revealed the survival of autochthonous literature, which, up until now, has been little-studied.
Lluís Ferran de Pol and Concentrationary Literature: From Campo de concentración to Un de tants
2011
This article analyses the different rewritings that Catalan writer Lluis Ferran de Pol (Arenys de Mar, 1911-1995) published of his most important concentrationary memories. Ferran de Pol was interned in French concentration camps during the first months of 1939. As a result of his confinement, he wrote Campo de concentracion, a book written in Spanish and published in the Mexican newspaper El Nacional during his exile in Mexico. Back in Catalonia in the early 1960s, he rewrote these prose pieces into Catalan and published them under the title De lluny i de prop (1973). In 2009 this work saw another edition in Catalan under the title Un de tants, edited by Josep-Vicent Garcia.
Del hospital de pobres a la cultura hospitalo-céntrica. Economía política y cambio cultural en el sistema hospitalario catalán / From the poor hospit…
2017
The Editorial Opinion of the Mainstream Media During the Catalan Elections of 2017: A Madrid–Barcelona Comparative Study
2020
This article is a follow-up to an article published in the American Behavioral Scientist in 2017, titled “Shaping public opinion for confrontation: Catalan independence claims as represented in Spanish, Catalan, Valencian, and Basque Editorials.” At that time, our study was based on opinions expressed in mainstream newspaper editorials during two significant events in Catalonia’s recent history: the demonstration against the Spanish Constitutional Court ruling on the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia of July 10, 2010, and the mass pro-independence demonstration held on September 11, 2012. The research sought to compare the press reports published in Catalonia, Valencia, and the Basque Count…
Shaping public Opinion for confrontation : catalan independence claims as represented in spanish, catalan, valencian, and basque editorials
2017
Editorials represent a newspaper’s principal means of ideological positioning and serve to identify the attitude of each newspaper and its readership to some of the main actors in any given conflict, especially those that are political in nature. Catalonia’s independence movement has experienced a surge in recent years. The turning point came in July 2010, after Spain’s constitutional court ruled against some aspects of Catalonia’s Statute of Autonomy (the legislation regulating the relationship between the Catalan autonomous community and the Spanish state). The ruling annulled some of the articles of the statute. The demonstration in support of Catalan independence that took place on Sep…

2017
