Effect of methylparaben in Artemia franciscana.

In this study, the toxicity of methylparaben (MeP) an emerging contaminant, was analysed in the sexual species Artemia franciscana, due to its presence in coastal areas and marine saltworks in the Mediterranean region. The acute toxicity (24 h-LC50) of MeP in nauplii was tested and its chronic effect (9 days) evaluated by measuring survival and growth under two sublethal concentrations (0.0085 and 0.017 mg/L). Cholesterol Content in Human Milk during Lactation: A Comparative Study of Enzymatic and Chromatographic Methods.

This study validates a gas chromatography (GC) method for determining the sterol profile of human milk (HM) and compares it with an enzymatic-spectrophotometric (E-S) method. Good linearity ( r > 0.97) and low limits of detection and quantification were obtained with the GC method (<1.8 and <6 μg/100 g of HM, respectively). Suitable intra- and interassay precisions (all <18%) and satisfactory recovery percentages (80-109%) were obtained for both methods. In addition, both methodologies were used to assess cholesterol evolution in HM during lactation, showing a 50% decrease at 6 months versus colostrum. Cytotoxic effects of zearalenone and its metabolites and antioxidant cell defense in CHO-K1 cells.

Zearalenone (ZEA) and its metabolites (α-zearalenol; α-ZOL, β-zearalenol; β-ZOL) are secondary metabolites of Fusarium fungi that produce cell injury. The present study explores mycotoxin-induced cell damage and cellular protection mechanisms in CHO-K1 cells. Cytotoxicity has been determined by reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and DNA damage. ROS production was determined using the fluorescein assay and DNA strand breakage by comet assay. Intracellular protection systems were glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Inflammation associated with microglia activation in neuronal injury can be achieved by LPS exposure. Oxidative damage and disturbance of antioxidant capacity by zearalenone and its metabolites in human cells.

Mycotoxin contamination of foods and feeds represent a serious problem worldwide. Zearalenone (ZEA) is a secondary metabolite produced by Fusarium species. This study explores oxidative cellular damage and intracellular defense mechanisms (enzymatic and non-enzymatic) in the hepatoma cell line HepG2 after exposure to ZEA and its metabolites (α-zearalenol, α-ZOL; β-zearalenol, β-ZOL).
