Direct comparison of the amino acid sequences of microsomal and soluble epoxide hydrolase superficially indicates that these enzymes are unrelated. Both proteins, however, share significant sequence similarity to a bacterial haloalkane dehalogenase that has earlier been shown to belong to the alpha/beta hydrolase fold family of enzymes. The catalytic mechanism for the dehalogenase has been elucidated in detail [Verschueren et al. Whereas shortened reaction times were observed by using microwave irradiation or catalytic cuprous chloride, no significant stereoselectivity change was in general noticed. Reacting 2,2-dicyano-3-aryloxiranes with 2-cyclopentenone next afforded 3-aryl-4-oxohexahydro-1H-cyclopenta[c]furan-1,1-dicarbonitriles, and the endo stereoisomers were isolated. Six new hybrid materials composed of carbon nanohorns (CNHs) and highly cross-linked imidazolium salts were easily synthesized using a one-step procedure based on the radical oligomerization of bis-vinylimidazolium salts (bVImiX) in the presence of pristine CNHs. The hybrid materials were characterized and employed as the sole catalysts for the conversion of carbon dioxide into cyclic carbonate by reaction with epoxides.
