Synthesis of chemisorbed imidazolium and phosphonium cations by reaction of ionic liquid precursors with silica.
2010
The reaction of four different basic ionic liquid precursors with Aerosil®300 is presented. Chemisorbed imidazolium and phosphonium cations, with silanolate anions as part of the silicatic support, were obtained and investigated with various solid state NMR techniques.
CO2 as a C1-Building Block for Dialkyl Carbonate Synthesis
2002
Carbon dioxide, one of the major man-made greenhouse gas, is a renewable resource of carbon which can be viewed as a C1 synthon to build valuable chemicals. The development of new applications is of major interest considering CO2 conversion and environmentally friendly reactions. As chemical catalysis offers interesting options, we are studying the molecular design of catalysts for the formation of dialkyl carbonates from alcohols and CO2. This paper reports results on the mechanistic approach for dialkyl carbonate formation with alkoxybutyl tin(IV) compounds. The insertion of CO2 into Sn-OR bonds (R = Me, 1Pr) occurs at atmospheric pressure and room temperature leading to alkylcarbonato ti…

Selective Hydrogenation of 1,3-Butadiene to 1-Butene by Pd(0) Nanoparticles Embedded in Imidazolium Ionic Liquids
2005
The reduction of Pd(acac)2 (acac=acetylacetonate), dissolved in 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMI⋅PF6) or tetrafluoroborate (BMI⋅BF4) ionic liquids, by molecular hydrogen (4 atm) at 75 °C affords stable, nanoscale Pd(0) particles with sizes of 4.9±0.8 nm. Inasmuch as 1,3-butadiene is at least four times more soluble in the BMI⋅BF4 than butenes, the selective partial hydrogenation could be performed by Pd(0) nanoparticles embedded in the ionic liquid. Thus, the isolated nanoparticles promote the hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene to butenes under solventless or multiphase conditions. Selectivities up to 97% in butenes were observed in the hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene by Pd…

Polyfurfuryl alcohol composite as adsorbent of polychlorinated biphenyls and pyrethroid insecticides
2007
Abstract Composites from furfuryl alcohol and silica gel were prepared in dichloromethane using trifluoroacetic acid as catalyst and characterized by means of thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms. The polymer content in the composites ranged between 19.5% and 32.9%. The capability to adsorb polychlorinated biphenyls and pyrethroid insecticides was tested for composite samples containing different percentages of polymer. Pyrethroids are retained almost totally by composites containing around 24–33% of polymer, while recovery of PCBs close to 80% is obtained with all the composites. No selectivity between compounds of the sa…

TiO2-Based Photocatalysis for Organic Synthesis
2010
A major aim of the contemporary chemistry is to replace old environmentally hazardous processes with new, energy efficient routes allowing to reduce or totally avoid the use and production of harmful chemicals and to maximise the quantity of raw material that ends up in the final product. This chapter gives an account of TiO2-based selective photocatalysis as a green synthetic tool for the production of organics. Some case studies of the most common transformations carried out by means of photocatalytic reactions are illustrated in a midway perspective between photochemistry and organic chemistry.
Steam-activated FeMFI zeolites. Evolution of iron species and activity in direct N2O decomposition
2003
Abstract In this paper the effect of the composition and steaming conditions of FeMFI catalysts on activity in direct N2O decomposition is investigated. MFI zeolites with different framework compositions (FeAlSi, FeGaSi, and FeSi) and without iron ( 100 mbar H2O in N2) favor the extraction of framework iron, enabling the application of lower activation temperatures. The optimum temperature during steam activation is that at which extraction of framework iron is complete without extensive clustering of extra-framework iron species into oxide particles, as was demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy and electrochemical characterization of the samples. Additional experiments show…
