Catalytic reduction of nitrates and nitrites in water solution on pumice-supported Pd–Cu catalysts

Abstract Two series of pumice-supported palladium and palladium–copper catalysts, prepared by impregnation with different palladium and copper precursors, were tested for the hydrogenation of aqueous nitrate and nitrite solutions. Measurements were performed in a stirred tank reactor, operating in batch conditions, in buffered water solution at atmospheric pressure and at 293 K. The activities of the catalysts were calculated in terms of nitrate and/or nitrite removal. With the monometallic Pd/pumice, the reduction of nitrite is highly selective; only 0.2% of the initial nitrite content is converted to ammonium ions. Abstract Mixed oxides of ZrO2 and SiO2 were synthesized by a sol-gel technique by using zirconyl chloride and commercial silica gel as starting materials. The paper reports some surface features of the powders and the photoreactivity results obtained in the oxidation of 4-nitrophenol in aqueous suspensions of powdered photocatalyst. The optical characterization of the suspension was also performed by measuring the photon flows reflected and absorbed by the reacting system. The photoactivity exhibited by the ZrO2SiO2 samples is very scarce especially if compared with that shown by a TiO2 sample tested at equal experimental conditions. A simple and expedient method for the synthesis of 3-methylene-isoindolin-1-ones 4 under aqueous phase-transfer conditions has been developed. Starting from 2-iodobenzamides 1 and (silyl) alkynes, the products are obtained in high yields and short reaction times (30 min) with the use of inexpensive CuCl/PPh3 catalyst system in the presence of n-Bu4NBr (TBAB) as a phase-transfer agent. Terminal alkynes are conveniently "unmasked" upon in situ desilylation under the reaction conditions. Alkynes possessing heterocyclic moieties were also found as amenable substrates. Novel pathways for the preparation of mesoporous MCM-41 materials: control of porosity and morphology

Two novel synthesis routes for the preparation of mesoporous MCM-41 materials are introduced. Both methods use tetra-n-alkoxysilanes such as tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) or tetra-n-propoxysilane (TPS) as a silica source which are added to an aqueous solution of a cationic surfactant in the presence of ammonia as catalyst. In this study, n-alkyltrimethylammonium bromides and n-alkylpyridinium chlorides were employed as templates. The addition of an alcohol (e.g. ethanol or isopropanol) leads to a homogeneous system which allows the formation of spherical MCM-41 particles. Removal of drugs in aqueous systens by photoassisted degradation

Aqueous solutions of tetracycline, lincomycin and ranitidine were irradiated with UV light in homogeneous and heterogeneous systems. Two commercial polycrystalline TiO2 powders (Degussa P25 and Merck) were used as photocatalysts. After 5A h, an appreciable photolytic degradation of tetracycline and ranitidine was observed while the degradation of lincomycin was noticeably lower. As far as the mineralization is concerned, a small decrease of the TOC values was measured in the case of tetracycline whereas negligible variations were found for lincomycin or ranitidine. The conversion of ptaquiloside (PtQ), a bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) carcinogen, to pterosin B (PtB), which is involved in the underlying mechanisms of PtQ genotoxicity and carcinogenicity, has been theoretically studied in aqueous neutral (AN) and acid (AA) media, using DFT methods at the PCM(water)-B3LYP/6-31G(d)//B3LYP/6-31G(d) computational level. The β-elimination of glucose in AN and four reactive channels (A-D) defined by as many protonation sites in PtQ were calculated. Activation enthalpy decreases (from 42.0 to 12.6 kcal mol−1) in AA relative to AN suggesting protic catalysis. Some working principles of heterogeneous photocatalysis by semiconductors

The present paper outlines some of the principles which are the working base for the photocatalytic processes: we refer to those photocatalytic processes performed using irradiated semiconductors. The steps related to the photoproduction of electron-hole pairs and their separation are discussed. It is also shown how the step of pair separation induces the formation of various chemical species, some of which are useful for the oxidation reactions. It is also shown that in order to reach a detailed description of photocatalytic processes it is necessary to have the knowledge of both the electronic and the physicochemical features of the semiconductors. Three face-to-face linked porphyrin-corrole dyads were investigated as to their electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, and chloride-binding properties in dichloromethane or benzonitrile. The same three compounds were also investigated as to their ability to catalyze the electroreduction of dioxygen in aqueous 1 M HClO4 or HCl when adsorbed on a graphite electrode.
