Prevalence of corneal astigmatism before cataract surgery.

2008

To analyze the prevalence and presentation patterns of corneal astigmatism in cataract surgery candidates.University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain.Refractive and keratometric values were measured before surgery in patients having cataract extraction. Descriptive statistics of refractive and keratometric cylinder data were analyzed and correlated by age ranges.Refractive and keratometric data from 4,540 eyes of 2,415 patients (mean age 60.59 years +/- 9.87 [SD]; range 32 to 87 years) differed significantly when the patients were divided into 10-year subsets. There was a trend toward less negative corneal astigmatism values, except the steepest corneal radius and the J(45) vector component, in…

Aqueous Humor Levels of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Retinitis Pigmentosa

2008

PURPOSE To determine the level of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) in aqueous humors of patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). METHODS A prospective, comparative control study. Aqueous humor was collected from 16 eyes of 16 patients with RP. The level of VEGF-A was determined with a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. The control group comprised 16 aqueous samples from 16 patients about to undergo cataract surgery and without any other ocular or systemic diseases. RESULTS The concentration of VEGF-A in aqueous humor was markedly lower in patients with RP than in control subjects (Mann-Whitney U test, P < 0.001). The level of VEGF-A was 94.9 +/- 99.8 …

Monocular and binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity, best corrected distance visual acuity, uncorrected near visual acuity, best distance-corrected near visual acuity, spectacle dependence, undesired visual symptoms, patient satisfaction, and incidence of posterior capsule opacification were analyzed 6 months and 3 years postoperatively. Results The mean u…

Effect of trypan blue on the elasticity of the human anterior lens capsule.

2007

Purpose To evaluate the effect of trypan blue (VisionBlue) staining on the elastic properties of the human anterior lens capsule. Setting Center for Vision Science, Ruhr University Eye Hospital, Bochum, Germany. Methods Nineteen anterior capsules were obtained from 19 human eyes at the time of cataract operation. Two same-size strips were prepared from each capsule; 1 was exposed to trypan blue staining for 10 seconds, and the other was a control. The elasticity measurements were performed on both specimens using a modified rheometer. Results The mean age of the patients was 75.3 years ± 13.3 (SD) (range 35 to 89 years). Sixty-three measurements of 19 suitable specimen pairs were performed.…

Accommodative intraocular lenses: current status

2005

Purpose of review The possibility of using a monofocal IOL with accommodative ability allows refractive cataract surgery with a clearly decreased potential of photic phenomena. Three IOLs of different designs and materials have demonstrated accommodative ability, but the degree of accommodative amplitude has been reported to different extents and variabilities. The plate-haptic CrystaLens has a hinged design that might permit forward movement of the optic as a result of pressure changes in the vitreous cavity. The 1CU has modified haptics that bend in the bag as the lens capsule contracts, which are supposed to cause anterior displacement of the lens optic. With the dual-optic one-piece Syn…

Ocular biometry with swept-source optical coherence tomography

2020

This study aimed to summarize the outcomes reported when swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) is used for ocular biometry. A literature search was performed to identify publications reporting clinical outcomes of patients measured with commercial SS-OCT. Twenty-nine studies were included in this review. A comprehensive analysis of the available data was performed, focusing on parameters used for intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation in cataract surgery, including keratometry, central corneal thickness, white-to-white distance, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, axial length, IOL power, and pupil diameter. Different metrics for repeatability, reproducibility, and agreem…

Implantation of the modified endocapsular bending ring in pediatric cataract surgery using a viscoadaptive viscoelastic agent.

1999

Cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in pediatric eyes remain controversial. Using a viscoadaptive viscoelastic agent, we implanted a modified capsular bending ring (CBR) as well as an acrylic IOL with a sharp-optic-edge design in the capsular bag. All operated eyes demonstrated a low postoperative inflammatory reaction and a clinically well-centered IOL. The band-shaped, sharp-edged CBR facilitates the creation of a sharp, discontinuous bend in the equatorial capsule, which prevents anterior and posterior capsule opacification. Combining the viscoadaptive viscoelastic agent and the CBR enhances the safety of primary and secondary posterior chamber IOL implantation in pe…

Fractal-structured multifocal intraocular lens

2017

[EN] In this work, we present a new concept of IOL design inspired by the demonstrated properties of reduced chromatic aberration and extended depth of focus of Fractal zone plates. A detailed description of a proof of concept IOL is provided. The result was numerically characterized, and fabricated by lathe turning. The prototype was tested in vitro using dedicated optical system and software. The theoretical Point Spread Function along the optical axis, computed for several wavelengths, showed that for each wavelength, the IOL produces two main foci surrounded by numerous secondary foci that partially overlap each other for different wavelengths. The result is that both, the near focus an…

Material properties of various intraocular lenses in an experimental study.

2002

Introduction: With the recent introduction of small-incision cataract surgery, requirements for intraocular lens (IOL) flexibility, strength and hydrophilicity have rapidly evolved. The IOL surface, however, remains a critical factor influencing uveal biocompatibility. Purpose: To objectively quantify factors of material properties of various IOLs using contact angle measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic-mechanical measurements and scanning electron microscopy. Material and Methods: In our study, 17 currently available IOLs were investigated using contact angle measurements to assess hydrophilicity and biocompatibil…

Canaloplasty with mitomycin C after previous combined cataract surgery and Schlemm's canal microstent implantation.

2021

We report on a 56-year-old male with primary open-angle glaucoma who underwent mitomycin C augmented canaloplasty enabling filtration in the right eye after cataract surgery combined with a Schlemm’s canal microstent 3 years previously. He showed progressive glaucomatous optic neuropathy and was highly myopic (axial length 32.05 mm, spherical equivalent −18.75 dioptres in the right eye). Augmented canaloplasty was performed uneventfully and 360° catheterisation was achieved followed by the placement of a 10-0 polypropylene suture in Schlemm’s canal. Intraocular pressure (IOP) in the first post-operative day was reduced from 19 to 6 mmHg. At 1-month follow-up IOP was 12 mmHg off glaucoma me…
